“The city has such an energy and is so full of enthusiastic, hustling young people that I was pleasantly surprised.” ---Gertrude H., Milwaukee

“We’ve never stayed in a hostel type lodging before, but decided to give it a try in Berlin, where they have so many of them. It was strange sharing a bath, but we got used to it and met a lot of friendly people along the way. Highly recommend you try this. (And it was cheap.)” ---Ramona E., Phoenix

    Chapter 1

    WHY BERLIN?

Berlin, Germany’s largest city, once again became its capital after the Unification when East Germany collapsed under the weight of the Communist failure.

The Second World War badly damaged it, of course. How many horrifying images of Berlin have we all seen on the History Channel? While West Berlin began rebuilding right after the war, East Berlin descended into a dormant state under the cruel Communist puppet government, but once the Berlin Wall came tumbling down, the East has been steadily rebuilt, until now one gets the sense that the city is almost whole again.

    Almost the old Berlin?

Indeed, wandering through the clean streets today, taking in the amazing architecture, the numerous monuments, churches and other impressive edifices, a young person might wonder that the city had ever been scarred by war at all.

Berlin is a vast city with several districts offering sightseeing, restaurants and its exuberant nightlife. German is the primary language being spoken but do not get discouraged as many tourists attraction feature English as well as French.

Berlin is a relatively young city by its European standards, dating to the thirteenth century, and has a huge international community.

Berlin is also a beautiful city so allow plenty of time to see the sights.

Viel vergnügen. Have a good time.

    Chapter 2

    GETTING ABOUT

The public transport system is superb. A good transit map is essential. The Berlin Tourist Information Office is an excellent resource for finding more about the city. You can make use of the excellent bus, tram, train and underground services to get around.
