COLD CASE
Why are we here again?
Mike Evans asked through chattering teeth. He stared out at the bright white sheet of ice, stretching to the horizon. This place is a winter wasteland.
Actually, Mike,
interrupted his newfound friend and dino-adventuring sidekick, Shannon, "right now, it’s summer in Antarctica."
Mike rolled his eyes and sighed. That’s the tenth time you’ve told me that!
Then I probably already told you that Antarctica isn’t a wasteland at all,
she added. It’s actually considered a desert.
Yep, you told me that too,
said Mike, annoyed. But there’s no way this place is a desert, Shannon. My teeth wouldn’t be chattering this much if I was in the Mojave!
Oh, stop being such a wimp, Dino-Mike!
came a familiar voice.
Mike spun around and spotted his archenemy standing in the doorway of the scientific base camp.
Jurassic Jeff,
he grumbled.
Actually, Jeff was no longer Mike’s worst enemy — but he wasn’t his favorite person either. Shannon’s older brother was super smart (he once brought dinosaurs back to the present day, after all), but his intelligence could be incredibly helpful or incredibly harmful. Dino-Mike just hoped Jeff hadn’t woken up on the wrong side of the bunk this morning.
Who are you calling a wimp, Jeff?
asked Mike. Didn’t you refuse to come on our last expedition to Australia because of all the spiders and snakes?
Jurassic Jeff folded his arms across his chest and let out a humph.
And speaking of Australia,
added Mike, turning to Shannon, that’s a continent with proper deserts, not ones covered in snow and ice.
