About this ebook

In her young life, Kirsten heard the same things over and over. How fortunate she was to live in Las Joyas as the rest of the planet had been wasted by the storms. How thankful she should be to breathe the clean, healthy air of the domes rather than the dank, dirty dust of the underground villages. That she could have anything, be anything as soon as she paid off her corporate debt and became a real citizen.

But the blonde asset had questions. Why had the air left her so weak and sickly? How could one live under a dome and say what didn't exist on the outside? If paying one's debt was so easy, why were there so many old, unhappy slaves in Techview?

So when they told her that the Boko Witch was taking assets who didn't behave as they should, Kirsten decided to stick with what she knew.

She knew her mother loved her more than life itself.
She knew that being the daughter of a slave was worse than being a slave.
And anyone could call themselves a witch until the real ones arrived.

    Dedication

In 2014, approximately 276 girls were abducted from the school they attended in the city of Chibok, Nigeria. Most of them were never rescued as of two years later and it is widely believed that they have been individually sold or given to soldiers as mates, but the details hardly matter.

If that had happened in the United States, I have to believe that even if the girls came from the poorest neighborhoods there would have been such a huge public outpouring of outrage and angst, that they would have been quickly found, returned and their abductors punished. At least I believe so.

But they were not Americans and so we don't care that much.

And of course the main reason these girls were targeted was not because they were female but because they were attending school.

Growing up, Kirsten had heard the same things over and over - how fortunate she was to live in Las Joyas while the rest of the planet was ravaged by storms; how thankful she should be to breathe the clean, healthy air of the domes rather than the dank, dirty dust of the underground villages; that she could have anything, she could obtain any goal, as soon as she paid off her corporate debt and became a real citizen.

But the blonde asset had questions. If dome air was so clean, why had it left her so sickly? And how could those who live under a dome or within a tunnel know what had happened outside? And if paying one's debt was so easy, then why were there so many old, unhappy slaves in Techview?

So when she heard that the Boko Witch abducted those who didn't play by the rules, she decided to ignore what she heard and to stick with what she knew.

For instance, Kirsten knew her mother loved her more than life itself; she knew that being the daughter of a slave was worse than being a slave. And she was pretty sure that anyone could call themselves a witch and get away with it...unless and until the real ones arrived.

    The Making of Ultraforma

August Pollux looked over at the young newswoman for perhaps a second or so too long. Although well into his 60's, the head of the corporate titan, Performix Inc, still had an appreciation for the human form, he placed it on an equal level to the beauty of the mind and of nature. He was much too relaxed in this environment to catch his own wandering eye.

But why should he care? He was doing the rather average Techview communications studio a huge favor by granting them an personal interview concerning his company's newest and most sacred cash cow: Ultraforma.

His only condition? That he would be interviewed by one of the station's youngest reporters: Brandi Brant. Sure, he had claimed that his young daughter was an avid Q-ball player and logically was also an ardent fan of Miss Brant, who had led her school to the Q-ball championships twice during her time at Techview Academy North. Later he would realize that he had never even asked for an autograph on his daughter's behalf.

The station had tried to steer him toward one of their more popular, more seasoned, daily anchors with the promise of better ratings and all that. He refused and eventually got his way, naturally.

August had his own reasons for requesting Brandi. First, he wanted his 'product message' to go to a younger audience, especially young men, the kind that likely would tune in to watch the tall, beautiful, brunette reporter talk about mundane local issues. But he also expected that the inexperienced cub would let him deliver his sermon with very little interruption or challenge. Those were his primary goals, but if he also walked away with the pretty thing on his arm, well it wouldn't be the first time and he thought it was as likely as not.

Pollux was seated comfortably and silently rehearsing his lecture even as he noticed that Brandi was engaged in an intense conversation with the producer of the show. He checked one of the virtual monitors emitted by the station AI and noted that the number of program subscribers had doubled in the last five minutes as the interview was about to begin. He was drilling into the demographics as Brandi's lithe form walked over and took a seat with hardly ten seconds to spare. The producer did an audio introduction and Brandi smiled a greeting and tossed her hair as they received the final count down to start.

Tell me about Ultraforma, Mr. Pollux. I have to admit I've seen some promos but am honestly not sure exactly what it does. Let me rephrase, I am not aware of what it is intended to do?

He looked over at the young girl and into her brown eyes framed by a mane of long dark hair. He should have determined a priori if Miss Brant was a subscriber to any of his company's popular body enhancements meds or procedures. He took the question and ran with it, intending never to stop.

It makes sense that you wouldn't know much about Ultraforma, my dear. You see, young women of your age tend to be familiar with the various body enhancements available for women, products like Dazzle Eyes, Living Hair or Flash Nails. Or you might be familiar with well known health meds like Skinfirma or Leanmuscle. But Ultraforma is a product unto itself, it is not a body modification or a health aid, it is a life invigorator, a method of improving everything about yourself from within. It tends to appeal to the competitor who rejects 'the best that they can be'. That goal is not enough for such an individual. Instead they want 'the best that they could never be' and that is a change that only Ultraforma can bring.

Pollux smiled and paused for applause before recalling that this was not that style of interview. So instead he looked over at the young newsgirl for her approval. Brandi did not seem impressed.

How is it different from Performa or PerformaM or any of the similar products offered by your company or its competitors?

Pollux laughed with his eyes as his eyes darted beneath her chin, along her neck and into her cleavage, briefly.

Performa! Performa is not even comparable. I am required to disclose to you that my company, Performix, was on the ground floor in the development of the Performa line, a product in which we collaborated with Humantis before they bought us out. We wanted to move in an entirely novel and exciting direction...

But Brandi was not looking at him any more. She cut him off.

I'm looking at the response dashboard for this event, Mr. Pollux, and my viewers want to know the details of the difference...if any.

Sure, sure, Brandi, Pollux conceded, there are very clear differences. Performa is like a blind old lady dispensing vitamins to anyone who walks by. That's the analogy that I like to make. Performa travels through your body and if it finds some muscle, it tries to grow that muscle. If it finds some bone, it tries to strengthen that bone. It sees a human being as a pile of muscles, bones and nerves, it can't see the aesthetic proportion of those items which make the human body so beautiful. It can't improve you, it can only improve part of you. Pollux smiled, content with his dismantling of the competition.

And Ultraforma? What does IT do? Brandi asked patiently.

Ultraforma! Ultraforma doesn't tell a part of your body to get stronger or tougher or bigger! Ultraforma is like a personal trainer which is always with you. When you exercise, you'll want to exercise harder and longer. When you experience, you do so making full use of your eyes, your ears, your sense of smell, all of it. When you pay attention you will not become bored or tired. When you learn, you will be unsatisfied with open questions or with half answers. It is these things which will make you better, not some haphazard muscle builder. I admit, Ultraforma is for the enthusiast, for the person who strives toward perfection. If you just want to look the part, well then there are other products and procedures which attempt to do that.

It sounds to me like Ultraforma hijacks the body's nervous center. Is Ultraforma a viral manipulator?

August was shocked. At least he simulated the expression as best he could.

No, no! We do not use viral manipulators. And if we did, I wouldn't be able to tell you otherwise, that's for sure.

He scowled to himself, wishing he had chosen a more intelligent interviewer rather than be swayed by a shapely pair of legs.

    Laboratory C4 – Performix Inc

The man was nude and standing in a classic comic book position, each ankle cuffed and bound by a chain to the floor, each wrist pulled high into the air and held by a similar cuff to the ceiling. His muscled body glistened with an oily substance which exuded from his body; itself overheated despite the fans which spun nearby, blasting cool air against his thick thighs and muscled abdomen.

Around his reddened neck was an old metal band, apparently seamless. If anyone had cared to look, they would find faint lettering engraved, a name and a number. The first letters of the text was 'Prometh' and the number was 56.

Introduce the second viral manipulator, instructed a woman, seated nearby, a black AI helmet completely covering her face and skull as it bombarded her with the man's biological readings.

His body did not just seem to be sweating continuously, the oily substance actually ran down his arms and legs into a plastic collector below his body. There, the drops coalesced into larger drops and then into rivulets which ran into the floor and through tubes down below. Down to where Ultraforma was processed.

The perspiring man did not have a name. At least he did not have a name that was familiar to those who worked around him day by day. He had only a number but the people who produced consumer-grade Ultraforma from people like him did not know where he came from or how to find another like him, such was not their job and everyone was suitably motivated neither to worry about such matters nor discuss them.

    The Chosen

Wow! The Director's eyes lit up with practiced surprise perusing the test results as if it were a novel that she just couldn't put down. Reluctantly, the woman finally tore her eyes away from a display in her virtual world in order to make direct eye contact with the composed and patient young man who sat in front of her. Janice slid into a chair opposite him.

I can't believe that we almost missed you, Yanni. How did you feel about these tests? How did you think you performed?

I thought I did well. I certainly prepared and just being here is a moral victory for me and my family; I am the first to have such an opportunity.

Moral victory? Janice seemed dumbfounded, This is more like finding the end of the rainbow. Can I be honest with you, Yanni?

The boy looked up at the Director and he could see that she was unsure of herself. He could see that weakness in her but it was foreign to him. Yanni had always been confident that his actions, even if they were not optimal in the short term, were the ones that he needed to take, the path he was destined to take, to be the Maximum. He nodded to her.

I just wanted you to know that I haven't seen results like these before. I wasn't even sure they were possible! Janice's blue eyes were both apologetic and awed. "If, well if you continue your training with us, I am not even sure they will know
