The Writer's Plan - JD Lovil
Introduction
THERE ARE A GREAT MANY prospective Authors out in the world, all of which need information and guidance, through the maze of activities that must be completed, in order to publish their future masterpiece, and make it a thrilling success. In my humble way, I decided to try my hand at writing, and publishing, a resource reference, and a gentle guide through the maze.
You would think that this would be a simple task. Take the accumulated flotsam of information that I have accumulated, as I tried to find the path to publication, throw it together into a book, and call it a day. One of the lessons I have learned in my writing experience is that there are bears out there on the path that the writer must walk.
One of the best ways to give my readers access to online resources is to provide links to specific websites that provide those resources. This is a book about publishing your new book, and many of the platforms you might publish on will not let you put a link in your book to any of their competition. Even mentioning the competition in passing may be too much for them to permit.
Due to this, I will try to write this without directly linking to competing platforms, so that Apple does not have to put up with selling books that link to Amazon. I will also try to avoid as many references to competition as possible, but due to the subject matter of this book, invoking the names of the modern Publishing Gods will sometimes be unavoidable.
I will try to link to copious numbers of websites that provide lists, services and information, and are not direct competition for the publishing platforms. I hope that those are more valuable to you, anyway. Most of the platforms should be able to explain themselves better than I ever could explain them.
1. Belief
EVERYONE I HAVE EVER met thinks that he or she would like to write a book. At first glance, it seems like a straightforward task. Putting a few thousand words together is a little daunting at the beginning, but chapter by chapter, there is nothing that seems impossible about the act of writing a book. So, why do most of the dreamer's out there never get the book written, never have a book published, and most of them never even start a book?
We all have heard of Writer's Block, and we are all intimately familiar with procrastination. What is it about certain desirable projects that freeze us into place, never starting or completing the projects of our heart's desire?
There is a curious fact about living, and successfully doing things like writing that we would consider an indication of success in our lives. Most of us have a rather negative view of our ability to be successful. Most of us have a Self Esteem issue, when it comes to being a success. Let me tell you the secret to getting over this problem, and eliminating procrastination, Writer's Block, and avoidance of those things that would mean the most to us.
Our self-image is the view that we carry around in our heads as a sort of identity snapshot. Our minds refer to this mental image constantly, constantly reminding it of who we think we are, and what we are capable of doing, so that we do not involve ourselves in tasks and situations that are dangerous, impossible, or useless to us.
Our lives and experiences have created this picture of ourselves, and the trauma in our lives, usually emphasizes the 'I cannot' part of the story, instead of the 'I can' idea. It is all very protective, and it does more damage in our lives than anything the real world can throw at us.
At the bottom of every negative self-image is a belief, instilled by life, or by the people we have known. It creates expectations of what we are, and are not, capable of doing. It is hard to get rid of our expectations that restrict us, but it is easy to modify our beliefs.
Let us think about a scenario. Let us say that you were once nonreligious, and a girlfriend or boyfriend talked you into going to church with them one fine Sunday. You are uncertain about God, but you know that your future mating activity with your companion would be a religious experience, so you agree to go to church with them.
Somehow, the words the Preacher drones from the pulpit shows you a world of cause and effect that you had never thought about before, and the next Sunday, you go back to church only partially to cement your future Sexcapades. Soon, you start noticing when things appear to work out in accordance with something you heard in church, and you start to wonder if God really is out there.
As you look for more evidence to support the whole God theory, you start finding more supporting evidence every day, as your mind screens for, instead of against, the premise. A few months later, you suddenly realize that you actually believe that God exists. All it took was to absorb the concept that would not let go of you, and your mind did the rest.
I hate to agree with the neo-hippies, who say that visualization and affirmations will bestow a totally new life upon you, but they are as right as any broken clock. It is difficult to change your expectations about what will happen in your world, and to you, but if you repeat seeing, and hearing, that you are different from your original self-image, or that your prospects of success are other than what your experiences have shown you, visualizations and affirmations of success can indeed cause your (very literal in its acceptance of seeing and hearing) unconscious mind to believe that you are what it sees and hears you are, and then the magic of your unconscious mind goes to work to make it so.
In order to write a book, you need to believe that the task is a possible task. Make that one of the beliefs you hold, and your mind will clear the way for you to write the book. Set time aside for writing, look at the task as an enjoyable and consuming hobby, and plunge right into writing, before any fears can freeze you in place.
One of the big issues that your mind uses to stop you from publishing a book of some sort is that you have never previously published. The tasks of being an Author are a learning process, and you will not get everything right the first time around.
