About this ebook
Chess Fundamentals was first published thirteen years ago. Since then there have appeared at different times a number of articles dealing with the so-called Hypermodern Theory. Those who have read the articles may well have thought that something new, of vital importance, had been discovered. The fact is that the Hypermodern Theory is merely the application, during the opening stages generally, of the same old principles through the medium of somewhat new tactics. There has been no change in the fundamentals. The change has been only a change of form, and not always for the best at that.
In chess the tactics may change but the strategic fundamental principles are always the same, so that Chess Fundamentals is as good now as it was thirteen years ago. It will be as good a hundred years from now; as long in fact as the laws and rules of the game remain what they are at present. The reader may therefore go over the contents of the book with the assurance that there is in it everything he needs, and that there is nothing to be added and nothing to be changed. Chess Fundamentals was the one standard work of its kind thirteen years ago and the author firmly believes that it is the one standard work of its kind now.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A good book for the improving player. It is clear and concise, but perhaps too concise. It rewards careful study but needs to be supplemented with other material.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5J.R. Capablanca was one of the greatest chess players ever. He was not a hard worker and relied on his superior natural skills. He did produce a worthy book of fundamentals. This is it.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Capablanca was a chess grandmaster, one of the great chess players and this is his book of basic strategy. This book originally was owned by my mother; she taught herself how to play primarily by using this book, then taught me--and we went on to destroy the enemy! Er... I mean to enjoy playing the game with many others. It explains first principles such as good openings, controlling the center, attacking and cutting off pieces and good endgame strategies. A well-written, very useful guide accessibly for a beginner.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I feel 100 times smarter after doing each set of exercises. Then I forget to pick up the book for a few weeks and realize I forgot all those awesome lessons I just learned.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I recently watched the Queen’s Gambit on Netflix and it rekindled me interest in chess. I found this book on Project Gutenberg and gave it a try. Capablanca was a chess grandmaster and this book is mostly his notes. You’d better have an u delta ding of chess scoring before you read it, though.
