Kevin Guest House - Gerald L. Halligan

    2012.

    INTRODUCTION

The beliefs and optimism of a young doctor forged in 1897 merged with the beliefs of a family from Pennsylvania during July 1970 in Buffalo, New York.

Cyril and Claudia Garvey of Sharon, Pennsylvania brought their son Kevin to the Memorial Hospital in Buffalo, which was named after its founder, Dr. Roswell Park. Their deep love for the child along with unwavering faith carried them through and beyond the medical interventions during an 18-month period in the early 1970s. This would include a trip to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes in France, seeking a miraculous cure for Kevin’s illness.

Compelled by this troubling fact, they sought to create an option for others, even though Kevin’s treatment was their primary concern when traveling to Buffalo, New York.

Although the Garveys were resourceful individuals of strong character, help was needed to create a solution, which was desperately needed, for they observed that families whose children had life-threatening diseases would need long-term lodging, emotional support, and financial relief. Fortunately, they were able to attract like-minded advocates to address these problems, common to many coming Roswell Park Cancer Institute and other hospitals.

The Garveys’ concern for others during their own time of suffering is a model of active compassion. One former board member commented, The death of a child, a horrible tragedy, became a wellspring of their inspiration. Thus, the result of their collective influence, Kevin Guest House, opened in July 1972 and has remained in service for over 40 years. Just how that was accomplished, despite very difficult financial constraints, has been a major factor throughout the research interviews conducted for this book.

The opening chapter explores the original owners of the property and the features of houses within the Fruit Belt of Buffalo. Chapter 2 follows with a brief pictorial profile of the child, Kevin, whom most supporters of the house have only seen in his iconic
