I am soooo not one of those wives who, when shopping for an anniversary gift for my husband, purchases a gift based upon that whole year of marriage crap. How does it go anyway? Something like for year one the gift should be paper, year two is cotton, year three is leather, and so on. I buy whatever is on my heart to purchase. I’m always looking for that one thing that moves me or has meaning, ya know? Whether I buy it or make it, the gift has to really speak to me, serve a purpose, or be symbolic of something or a past experience in my husband’s and my life . . . or even just his life. After all, the gift is for him, so there is nothing wrong with it being all about him.

When it comes to gift giving, it’s like an art for me. I’m a giver. I buy gifts for people just because. I never have to get suggestions from anybody or ask a person what they want. I take pride in coming up with the perfect gift all on my own. I pay attention to what people say, do, wear, and post on social media.

If hell freezes over or heaven gets hotter than hell, and the day comes where I do decide to seek assistance, the last gift I’d take any kind of advice on is an anniversary gift for my husband. Nobody tells my husband or me how to get through year one, year two, and year three when it comes to the struggles of being married. So the audacity of someone to conjure up this theme telling us how to reward each other for getting through it. Because, trust and believe, dealing with me ain’t no easy feat.

I’m a firecracker, and not due to my red hair. Besides, that was manufactured in a box. And even though my hair color isn’t natural, I’m one hundred percent real. My Gram Gram used to call me firecracker when I was growing up. She said I was the nicest, sweetest little thing on this side of the river. She said I was passive and let many things slide. Gram Gram said my calm nature would be the cause of a life long lived. If a cousin took my toy right out of my hands, I’d let him or her play with it without whining or tattling. If someone called me a name, I’d brush it off without even trying to muster up a name twice as bad to shoot back at the person. But after taking so much, the unfortunate being who placed that last straw on the camel’s back was in for it. That’s when my Gram Gram said I’d explode. I’d like to think I’ve matured over the years, though, to the point where I truly don’t sweat the small stuff at all, even when it accumulates into something big.

Karter, my hubby, is the total opposite of me.
