Grace looked to her right. A stiff breeze made her chocolate locks flutter behind her and forced the young, confused girl to shield her eyes from bits of flying dust. Beyond the dirt road where she stood barefoot, a vast, swaying field of corn danced around. Its undulating rhythm was chaotic, though seamlessly graceful at the same time.

While running her fingers over her scalp, Grace called out to the dusty air, Anna?

There was no answer; only the rustling of the endless expanse of stalks.

For some reason that she could not place her finger on, Grace was nervous. Her stomach was knotted up and her heart fluttered beneath her ribs. The skin on the back of her neck prickled, causing her fine hairs to stand up on end. She pulled her hand out of her flapping hair and pressed her palm down over the rising goose flesh. It felt oddly feverish.

Something isn’t right, she mumbled and turned to look back down the narrow road. It stretched out, as many roads in the flat expanses of Kansas did, in a perfectly straight line until it touched the blue sky on the horizon. Her feet carried her down the short embankment, down to the line
