Anna Lisa jumped up and slid down the barn ladder to go and calm her horse. Something had spooked him—he was kicking the air, neighing and straining to get away. She pulled his reign and spoke to him, stroking his neck until he quieted down. There didn’t seem to be anything around, maybe it was a coyote? She listened but could only hear the sound of the wind blowing in the trees.

Is he OK? Sam peered down at her from the hayloft with a concerned look on his face.
