    It happened on a false spring afternoon, the fourth day of February, a Monday of crisp sounds in the prickly air. Helena accepted the offer after a slight hesitation, and then, while riding Pilar, the colt stumbled. Helena fell and died.

    Helena and Albert married in October 2007, and for four months, they lived in a small apartment on Kreuzstrasse in Zurich. She had always felt like a stranger in the city, which was so far away and different from her Portugal, where she used to fall asleep in the groves of fresh citrons on evenings during the harvest, with one of her ears pressed against her father’s shoulder, and the other straining to hear the fado playing across the fields of the festive estate.
