Chapter 1: The Voyage at Sea

The following is an historical account of the mysteries surrounding the 1587 attempt to establish an English settlement at Roanoke Island. The origin of this journal remains unknown to this day. Therefore, its accuracy has not been validated and is to be read at one’s own risk.

Day 1

We finally leave port after over a month’s delay. All one-hundred and seventeen of us crowded onto the Lyon with the flyboat and pinnace by our sides. All of our hearts burdened with fears, anxieties, and excitements; we were, after all, sailing to a new world.

Day 8

After being tortured by seasickness the last seven days of the journey, I finally feel some relief. It seems the sea-farer’s life is not for me. As fortune has it, I’m not the lone sufferer on board, as many have been far worse off than even I. I feel all the more wretched for the pregnant lady, our leader’s very own daughter. I wonder what kinds of persuasions he must have mustered in bringing along his own kin and her groom. I reckon they be of the same persuasions my own family fell for; a chance at adventure and an escape from the monotony of English living. At least that is what father said.

Day 13

I’ve taken a liking to a most lovely lass; one of the few nearest my age aboard the ship. Her name is Alis. We’ve only said a few words to each other, but there was something between us that I felt, a connection of sorts. Mother says girls should never be trusted at sea, retelling them old legends of Sirens and their alluring conducts. I suppose Mother can say such things, for she never had a daughter of her own. She always has a keen way of steering me away from every girl I’ve ever fancied, telling me not to spend the time on a girl until you’re much older, lad, as she puts it. But I cannot say she will be able to steer me away from this one. There’s just something about her bright blue eyes, full of an enthusiasm I’ve never seen the likes of in anyone before.
