About this ebook

When Faith was eight years old, she found out her best friend, Mercy, was a shifter. Since then, she’s spent her life living just on the outskirts of their world—and dreaming of Mercy’s older brother, Jensen. But Faith has always harbored another secret longing, one for Jensen’s best friend and the black sheep of the pride, Chance.

Chance Dixon was used to the looks he received from others of his pride. Considered an abomination by most, his only saving grace was his superior strength—and his friendship with Jensen Summer, the alpha’s son. The last person he ever thought would betray him.

    Chapter One

A nervous tension racing up and down her spine, Faith Conner once again berated herself for coming to the event. Smiling awkwardly at those who caught her eye, she made her way to the furthest corner of the room, hoping to stay out of sight for as long as possible.

Everyone from the pride seemed to be crammed into the Summers’ ridiculously enormous six-bedroom house to welcome home their son—a hero, a soldier.

    Jensen.

As the only human in the room, Faith felt like she wore a neon sign with all the peculiar looks people were sending her. Damn, she didn’t need this. Her nerves were already too tightly strung.

You look like you’re about to pass out. Her best friend, Mercy, chuckled as she finally caught up with her. Damn, she thought she had done such a good job of hiding. I haven’t seen you this jumpy since you found out why I growl in my sleep.

Faith had to laugh at that. She remembered when she had discovered the Summers’ secret. Finding out your best friend was a lion shifter was a hell of a thing for an eight-year-old.

Shut up, she said good naturedly, her gaze flitting around the room. Are you sure I should be here? I mean, this seems like a pride thing, and I’m not pride. Maybe I should just go. What do you think? she asked her friend for the third time.

You’re fine, their friend Chance reassured as he came up behind her, resting a comforting hand against her lower back. His Nordic-blue eyes were sharp and assessing on the crowd around them, and Faith reined in the urge to run her fingers through his messy raven locks and draw his attention back to her. Hell, if I’m allowed here, so are you.

Chance glared at a few men who passed them when their gaze lingered too long on either of them. Like Faith, Chance stood out from the current crowd and received his fair share of questionable looks, though not because he wasn’t a shifter. Orphaned as a child, Chance was raised by the pride’s beta and his wife. However, when he turned sixteen and shifted for the first time, they had realized his coat when shifted was white, unlike the rest of the pride. To paranormals, differences like that were seen as faults, or abnormalities, leaving Chance to find his place at the bottom of the totem pole as far as the pride was concerned. Sometimes Faith struggled to deal with how harsh shifters could come across. They were part human, after all.

Whispers from a group of women nearby who had suddenly found them interesting brought back her unease tenfold.

She’d done everything in her power to get out of this event, but Faith had promised her best friend that she would come to the party and celebrate her brother Jensen’s return.

You’re both fine, Mercy said, nudging Faith with her shoulder. Faith lurched, the force of her friend’s gesture sending her forward. Oh crap. Sorry, hun. Sometimes I forget.
