Everything old is new again. That’s what they say—and it’s certainly true in the world of fashion. Hemlines and necklines go up and down and then back up again, colors fall out of favor only to be rediscovered half a generation later, and the styles that once filled our grandparents’ closets (and later, cedar chests and attic storage) are now back out on the streets and hip
again.
Vintage fashions have seen a strong resurgence in recent days. Hipsters have repopularized the bow tie and the floral-print dress. Felt cloches and pin-striped fedoras fill the hat sections of department stores. Thrift shops see ugly Christmas sweaters
flying off their shelves. We are rediscovering the playful fashions of the ‘20s, the cute practicality of the ‘50s, the bold colors of the ‘70s and ‘80s.
On top of that, the contemporary desire to go green
—to make sustainable choices that minimize our impact on our planet’s environment and reduce waste—plays into the popularity of vintage styles. Why buy cheap new clothes when our attics and second-hand shops are full of treasures? Or when we can make our own clothes and accessories, following in the footsteps of the women and men who carefully hand-crafted these vintage garments the first time around? Pouring time and effort into creating a handmade hat, shawl, or bag adds value to the item and ensures that it will not find its way into a landfill after just a few short months.
This book gives you what you need to do just that, with 23 classic patterns for hats, handbags, shawls, scarves, and other accessories, dating from the 1910s to the early 1960s. All the patterns have been carefully checked and edited where the original pattern was awkward or unclear, and the materials lists have been updated with modern yarn and hook information. You get the classic styles of the past without the hassle and guesswork of trying to interpet a decades-old pattern.
Re-create these fashions of the past and celebrate the old becoming new again!
