The Stones of the Sleeping God continues the tale of Edrun Jaranacad directly on from The Beloved of the River Goddess.
Edrun and Jina, attended by the loyal Zan, travel to the Kalalutorm Citadel of Amronulu, where they are greeted like long-lost relatives and offered the hospitality of the house for as long as they want. They are now accepted as Lords of the Gathering, members of the ruling aristocracy of the Kalion Islands. Jina begins to heal rapidly, but Edrun, plagued both by questions and by doubts, becomes morose and taciturn.
To help jolly Edrun along, the Kalalutorm brothers and Vaided Mailaranarad, younger brother of Lord Ordron, suggest an expedition to the nearby Forest of Rabti where they can spend a few days hunting, drinking, and chasing milkmaids. They journey to the Forest where they are invited to spend the night in a stone ring sacred to the ancient Forest God, Rabti.
Edrun and his men are ambushed by a group of men-at-arms of the Jemegaidi Clan, resulting in Edrun's capture. He is taken to Chailam Alu to be the 'guest' of Lord Garin, Chieftain of the Jemegaidi. Garin has heard that Edrun enjoys the favour of the Gods, and wants him to join with him in a war to re-conquer the wide lands which once the Jemegaidi ruled without rival. This alliance would involve Edrun marrying Garin's daughter Taren...
