    I’d always been an overachiever. It wasn’t enough to get an A; I had to have an A+. I was dedicated. I was driven. I was going to go to Johns Hopkins for medical school and graduate at the top of my class. I was going to be a scientist and show everyone that just because I happened to be pretty boy didn’t mean I was stupid.

    Neither the brain, nor the face never helped me in Professor Sharp’s class though. He loathed me from the first moment I walked into his class. Organic chemistry fascinated me with all the interesting chemicals and symbols, like a poisonous secret code. It was hard to learn when the Professor just seemed to hate me so much.

    It was a new experience for me. I hungered to learn since I was in elementary school, so teachers had naturally liked me. Through high school and into my first year in undergrad, I asked questions, I listened, I worked hard, and they rewarded me by respecting me. All except Professor Sharp. To him I was a show-off and an irritating know-it-all. It didn’t matter if I was the only person in the class who knew the answer, my raised hand was always ignored.

    Getting into the best science program at my dream school meant I needed a perfect chemistry grade and a great recommendation from the teacher. At this point, it didn’t look like I was on track for either.
