    CHAPTER ONE

Skye, it’s time for bed, called Mummy from the foot of the stairs. You have to get up early tomorrow morning if you are going on the school outing."

She climbed the stairs to Skye’s bedroom, to say good night, where she found Skye sitting in her dressing gown at the computer, typing the monthly e-mail to granddad. I see you are ready for bed. Come, you can finish that when you get back from Yorkshire you are only going for a few days, and it’s getting late, you must be fresh for tomorrow.

I do feel a little tired, declared Skye, as Mummy tucked her into bed.

It had been arranged that the school would take five of its senior star pupils, those who had done exceptionally well during the term in presenting their schoolwork, on a three-day camping field trip to the Yorkshire Moors.

The school had provided all the necessary equipment: there were two tents, one large for the girls and a small one for the teacher, there were also sleeping bags and enough food packed in cool boxes, to see them through the three days they would be away. Added to this was a calor gas stove, pots and pans, utensils, battery lights for use in the tents and other odds and ends provided by the school, for a camping trip.

The outdoor weekend trip had been organized, to give the girls the opportunity to experience survival in the open countryside.

They were to travel up to Yorkshire in the school minibus, accompanied, of course by Miss Pringle. Miss Pringle was tall and slim: with short, black hair, and a look that gave the impression she would stand no nonsense. At forty years old, she was a strict disciplinarian but fair in dealing with her pupils.

The five girls, all in their early teens, were looking forward to the trip and could talk about nothing else for days before; it was going to be an adventure, having to look after themselves without their parents, overseeing them, and telling them what to do.

With help from her mother, who made sure Skye had packed all the right cloths for her three days trip, earlier that evening. Her mother was a little undecided about the backpack, but Skye told her that it was what all the young people used these days for travelling.

Mummy wished Skye good night and pleasant dreams as she turned out the light and closed the door behind her.

    CHAPTER TWO

Skye passed through the school gates; she could see her four friends already waiting under the porch to the main entrance. She joined them, and gave greetings to all. Georgia turned towards her.

You made it, Skye. We were beginning to think that, we would have to call for you, or even worse leave without you, she laughed.

If you must know, I stopped off at the sweet shop and bought each of us a Mars bar for the journey.

Holly, Alicia, Emily and Georgia came over to take their Mars bars and thanked Skye. Each made a comment of how nice she was to think of them.

I was only joking Skye, said Georgia. It’s that you are usually never late.

I have some news for you, said Skye. Now that I’m fourteen, the stable where I have been, taking riding lessons, has agreed to let me work there weekends and over the summer holiday, I’ll get to attend to the horses, and they’ll even pay me for it! How about that?"

You are so lucky Skye. We are all still looking
