    Chapter 1

    This is all for you?

Mary took in the hotel suite with a smile. It had two bedrooms and a Jacuzzi in the bathroom with a sweet balcony outside. It wasn’t the Plaza, but her publisher put her up in a nice suite of a mid-priced hotel in downtown New York City. I hope so. She turned to Becca. And you too, of course. I can’t let you stay in a normal room like all the regular people. We’ve made it!

You’ve made it, Becca corrected. You’re the rising literary star.

You’ll get there too. Maybe I can use my connections with the publisher to find you an agent.

    I guess.

What am I doing today? Mary would be lost without Becca, the organized one, who fielded her calls and kept her schedule up to date. Privately, Becca thought having an assistant had gone to Mary’s head, but it paid her bills.

You have your reading and book signing at two different stores.

    Two in one day?

It’s a big city. Come on, freshen up and change. We have to be at the first one in a couple of hours.

Mary frowned at herself in the mirror. It wasn’t that she didn’t love Becca, but she wished she had a man with her, someone supporting her at events and someone to go to bed with. How long had it been? She mentally counted. Really? She hadn’t had a date in two years? Time flies.

Well, she told herself, she was in the big leagues now. All the guys would love her now that she was getting famous. Who wouldn’t love this? she thought, tugging her shirt down over her breasts.

Her career was finally taking off, so her love life should certainly follow.

You got another one, Becca said when Mary stepped out of the bathroom half an hour later. Becca turned the laptop screen around so Mary could see her Facebook fan page.

’You whore, you’re untalented and ugly,’ Mary read. Pfft. I’m sure that guy has never even picked up my book. He doesn’t know what untalented means. And he needs glasses. Tell him that. Tell him I’m not a whore because he couldn’t get with this if he tried.

No, Becca said shortly. We won’t bring ourselves down to his level. I’m deleting his comment; I just thought you should see it.

Check my Amazon rating. Mary turned back into the bathroom, rummaging in her makeup bag for her favorite magenta lipstick.

He was here too, Becca said a minute later. ’This book sucks, don’t waste your time. Manure crusted newspaper is a better read. Plus, the author is a cow.’ One star.

"Asshole. Oh well, who will be laughing when I’m rich and famous? We will. He doesn’t have a book deal."

They heard a knock on the suite door, and Becca got up to answer it. A bellhop stood on the other side, holding a cardboard box. I was told I should deliver anything for Miss Merriweather to this room?

Yes, that’s us. Thank you, Becca said, taking the box.

A package for me? Mary asked, hurrying over. What is it?

It’s addressed to Tulip Merriweather, no return address. Becca took out her keys and slit the tape. She opened the lid, then jumped back. What the hell?

Inside the box was a bouquet of tulips, withered and dead. There’s a card. She gingerly picked it up between two fingers and opened it. ’It’s a shame flowers have to eventually die. Just like people.’

What does it mean? Mary demanded.

"Considering you’re Tulip Merriweather, and these are dead tulips, I think the message is pretty clear."

    Someone thinks I’m dying?

I think someone wishes it. Maybe I should cancel your signings today.

No! I won’t disappoint my fans because of some stupid threat. Anyone could have done it. It’s probably just a stupid prank. Some people have nothing better to do. Mary went to the room phone and dialed the front desk.

Hello? This is room 503. There was a package brought to me just now? Do you know how it was delivered? Oh, okay, thank you. Mary turned back to Becca. Popular courier service dropped it off. He said they asked who sent it, but the kid said the person didn’t leave any information.

You’re right, it’s probably just a stupid prank. Come on, we’re going to be late if we don’t leave now, Becca said, putting on her coat.
