    Chapter One

Sue’s community took almost a week to walk to the Gathering place. The communities of Earth’s survivors after the wars and desolation of two hundred years ago were very cautious when they ventured away from the safety of their strongholds, and Sue had spent a lot of time over the past few months looking forward to few weeks of relaxation and fun, meeting with people she saw only once every five years. Fortunately they’d encountered no fierce wild animals and no warring or starving tribes had attacked them on their journey. Actually the Earth seemed quite peaceful as they’d walked, encouraging Sue to believe that maybe, after two hundred years, the Earth was finally becoming safe.

She appreciated the security of their home by the sea, but she also liked meeting with people who lived in the hills and other places as well. Twice now she’d spent time talking to Nora, a woman her own age who lived by a waterfall. Sue had never seen a waterfall, but Nora had described the beauty and magnificence of it to her, just as she’d told Nora about the ocean. Sue loved swimming and fishing, and even making salt was a rewarding and enjoyable job.

But although her community had been waiting at the Gathering place for two days, only one other group had arrived, and it wasn’t Nora’s people. Sue was beginning to wonder why no others had joined them. Had they encountered danger on their journey here? She’d seen no sign of trouble, but then what did she know about land-based animals and other dangers after all? Not much.

The Gathering place was in the wide loop of a river, and after two days of helping set up the campsite, and staying close to the shelters, Sue decided to walk a short way beside the river. The men had explored the area, the young people had left the campsite, and no one had hinted that there were any risks at all, so she thought she should be safe here. Besides, she needed to stretch her legs. She hadn’t particularly enjoyed walking for six days to get here, but she didn’t want to stay inside the camp all the time either.

When she saw a young man lounging against one of the trees near the river, she walked to her right, farther away from him, so as not to disturb his solitude. But it appeared he wanted to be disturbed. He hurried across and stood directly in front of her, closer than she appreciated.

You aren’t too bad looking. You’ll do, he said.

What? She didn’t know him. He must have been from the other group, one of Cephus’s people. Women didn’t have much to do with the men, so it wasn’t surprising that she hadn’t recognized him.

You will suck my cock. I haven’t gotten off in days because of walking here and I demand you suck me now. To her shock, he grabbed hold of her arms.

I’m not your servant. You have no right to order me to do anything. Let me go.

You stupid little bitch. If you don’t suck me I’ll fuck you so hard you won’t be able to walk for a week. You can’t stop me.

Can’t I? Sue might not have been particularly tall or strong, but she’d always had a loud voice, and healthy lungs from all the swimming her people did. She dragged as much air unto her lungs as she could, and then let out the loudest, most terrifying shriek she could manage. She screamed on and on, making her oxygen last while the man wrestled with her, trying to cover her mouth with his hands.

Just when she was running out of breath and knew she couldn’t yell for much longer, she saw people rush into the little area where she stood.

Nora, her friend from previous Gatherings, grabbed the man’s arm, pulling it off her face, as he said, Shut up you fucking bitch. Shut the fuck up right now.

As she twisted and turned trying to get away from the man, the air in her lungs finally ran out. In the silence another man yelled in a powerful voice, Get your hands off my bride or I’ll break you in two.

Her attacker staggered backward, and Sue stumbled sideways. Standing beside one of the leaders she’d seen at the previous Gathering was a blond man dressed in purple. He was very tall, taller than anyone she’d seen before. He moved closer to her and asked, Are you hurt, my bride? She had no idea who he was or
