    THE RECKONING

    TYRIS AND STILTHIUS Menion trudged into Krendor.

    Soaked, muddy from head to toe and spattered with dried blood, they looked like men who had dragged themselves directly from a battlefield. The simple farmers and townsfolk of the village would have taken them for the walking dead had there been any such villagers to see them. Their dark faces lined with fatigue and their eyes red with lack of sleep, the brothers stared through the wisps of fog that still hung in the air, straining to see any sign of life in the gloom. Forcing one foot ahead of the other without thought or purpose, the huge men spared no energy to wonder where the people of Krendor were. It did not matter. Not now. They were not making their way to Krendor so much as they were getting away from what lay behind them.

    Things had been bad for the brothers for months now. Fleeing their homeland of Tuliny for the island of Kronos had been necessity more than choice. Their entire clan lay dead at the hands of rivals and Tyris and Stilthius were the last of their line. They took their revenge as best they had been able, killing the men who had done the actual murdering and a few others they knew to be behind the planning.
