About this ebook

This early work by Fergus Hume was originally published in 1908 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'The Green Mummy' is a tale of missing emeralds, murder, and a mummy. Fergusson Wright Hume was born on 8th July 1859 in England, the second son of Dr. James Hume. The family migrated to New Zealand where Fergus was enrolled at Otago Boys' High School, and later continued his legal and literary studies at the University of Otago. Hume returned to England in 1888 where he resided in London for a few years until moving to the Essex countryside. There he published over 100 novels, mainly in the mystery fiction genre, though none had the success of his début work.

Lytton Strachey (1880-1932) was an English writer and critic, best known for his innovation in the biographical genre. After starting his career by writing reviews and critical articles for periodicals, Strachey reached his first great success and crowning achievement with the publication of Eminent Victorians, which defied the conventional standards of biographical work. Strachey was a founding member of the Bloomsburg Group, a club of English artists, writers, intellectuals and philosophers. Growing very close to some of the members, Strachey participated in an open three-way relationship with Dora Carrington, a painter, and Ralph Partridge. Stachey published a total of fourteen major works, eight of which were publish posthumously.

This is a fairly typical melodrama of the Edwardian period. It has a couple of murders, blackmail,a stolen Inca mummy and some slightly soppy love interest mixed in. Characters say such things as "There's my Sid - dead - oh,my son, dead! dead!" and "Mine,Mine!" said Don Pedro, his dark eyes glittering. While the story lopes along at a fair pace and there are some quite exciting set-pieces on-route,the over-all impression is of a rather slight story. A period curiosity in other words, and read with this in mind an unintentionally amusing book.
