13,500 BCE - Migration of Hunter-Gatherers from Beringia

The history of the United States of America began thousands of years before the idea of America even existed. During the last Ice Age, circa 13,500 BCE, a group of hunter-gatherers came to North America. These people, known as Paleo-Indians, crossed into what is today Alaska from Russia via a land bridge called Beringia located in the modern Bering Strait. Scholars theorize that these people were merely following the wild game, which was their primary food source. As the Paleo-Indians moved south, they found land that was significantly easier to inhabit and began spreading out, owing to an ever-increasing food supply. Over the next several millennia, many more groups of Paleo-Indians crossed the land bridge, until plate tectonics caused the bridge to submerge. After that, no new settlers would come to North America for centuries. The populations of these people began to increase greatly, and over time, these groups spread as far south as the southern tip of South America. Hundreds of distinct cultures emerged and developed until Europeans began to explore the Americas.
