    CENTRAL AMERICA

    The raptor attacked as soon as they entered the compound. Corporal Sharon Kelly and the two other surviving members of C-Team had managed to clamber in over the high wall, cutting their way through coils of razor wire and dropping to the ground on the other side. Immediately, they saw the predatory dinosaur come charging towards them from the deep shadows beside a large hangar-like structure in the centre, watching it flare greenly in their night-vision goggles. It was a big one - Utahraptor ostrommaysorum, the size of a polar bear, wielding sabre-like claws and sheathed in rudimentary feathers, for all the world like a monstrous, swift-running bird of prey.

    This one's mine, ladies. Genial giant Sam Wolfowicz knelt, taking careful aim with his Special Operations issue pulse rifle. The others readied their own weapons but held back, aware that all of them were low on power. As well as caseless ammo, their rifles took the new plasma rounds, in 6-centimetre magazines which were actually high-pressure fuel cells, and each C-Team member was down to his or her last one. Now, every shot had to count.

    Take it away, Sam, said Kelly, checking the charge on her own rifle. Wolfowicz was a fine soldier but tended towards over-confidence. Meanwhile, she and Martina Lopez, the third survivor, kept watch over all approaches. Raptors hunted in packs. Where there was one, there were likely to be others, zeroing in on their prey from different points of the compass. They were sneaky and fearless and fast - horribly, insanely fast.

    The raptor closed in. Madre de dios muttered Lopez, Sam, shoot! At ten paces, Wolfowicz fired, sending a single bolt of plasma the size of a ball bearing into the creature's torso, just above where the wishbone would be. A loud crackle, a flash like a miniature sunburst, and the raptor was knocked off its feet mid-stride and keeled over, dead.

    Good work, private, said Kelly. Let's move out of here before his buddies arrive. She motioned the two others to follow and they slipped north along the perimeter wall, each of them alert to
