Eternity and the Ant

About this ebook
The idea for this story was conceived thirty years ago when a life teacher of sorts presented a simple illustration of eternity to a small group of listeners. It is not known whether or not the simple little mind picture stayed with others throughout the years in the same way that it stayed with the author. It is unlikely that anyone remembers the names or faces of those gathered together on that particular day. In this book, images that remained in the author’s mind found their way upon the pages. The intention is for readers to begin thinking about this thing called eternity when pondering certain questions in life. The author promises readers that they’ll have something to think about long after they’re finished with this short, but profound story.

Eternity and the Ant
Introduction
It was a typical summer day along the eastern seaboard, with the sun beating down upon people of all shapes and sizes, colors and ages. It seems that the ocean is the appropriate place to carry on just about any kind of activity. A gentle breeze carried scents of suntan lotion mixed with salt air. Sounds ranging from the roaring of the surf to radio stations playing a wide variety of music and weather forecasts created a soundtrack for the playful chaos. Seagulls circled overhead, as children built castles in the sand. Lifeguards, with noses white from sunscreen, sat high in wooden chairs with wheels, overlooking the scene with a predictable need to occasionally blow their whistles. It appeared that everything that was happening in the world at that point in time was taking place there on that seashore, however, a closer look revealed another world that was in sharp contrast to the seemingly never ending life of leisure. This other world, though not within view of the people that passed over it regularly, was a place where work and play fit together seamlessly, and where hundreds of inhabitants all toiled together for the betterment of the group as a whole. This other world was an ant colony, located underneath a weathered wooden bridge that served as a walkway from a parking lot to the beach. This is the place where our story begins…
Chapter One
Watch where you’re going, Charlie
, was a typical warning heard above the sound of hundreds of other ants conversing as they went about their business of building and repairing the sprawling anthill beneath the walk bridge.
