The White Painted Crucifix
Will you please slow down, Steve. You’re scaring me,
his girlfriend, Clare, pleaded as he raced along the dark, quiet winding country lanes heading home.
I know these roads very well, my love. Please don’t worry,
he replied.
It was a clear November night. Stars twinkled above, and the moon was at its fullest.
I don’t care,
protested Clare. Slow down, now.
Steve did as he was told. Taking a sharp, right-hand bend, he pointed into the darkness. There’s some brick wall surrounding that estate. In daylight, most of it looks ready to collapse at any moment.
The road swept to the left, and Steve suddenly slammed on the brakes as Clare screamed, Look out!
They skidded to a halt within a few feet of the figure that blindly crossed the road before hurrying along the grass verge away from the now motionless car. Relieved, Clare looked out of her passenger window to see a white painted cross on the perimeter wall.
It’s that ghost of the nun,
Steve shouted excitedly, it’s a well known folklore story.
Clutching his mobile phone, he opened the driver’s door.
Clare grabbed his arm. What the bloody hell do you think you’re doing?
she shouted.
I’m going to get a photograph—you know, evidence! We could make some money here,
he replied.
Steve left the car and chased after the ghostly nun, who then turned up a dirt track road. Within a minute or so he had caught up with the nun, who suddenly stopped dead and now stood facing away from him.
Steve held his camera phone out, ready to take a photo, before asking if the nun needed any help. A silent standoff ensued for what seemed an age. Could you please turn around and answer me?
Steve said, breaking the eerie silence.
The nun spun around, and the phone’s flash briefly lit up their surroundings before the phone fell to the ground, landing with a soft thump on a clump of grass growing out of one of the many potholes.
A short time passed, and Clare could not sit waiting any longer. After switching on the car’s hazard lights, she got out of the vehicle and quickly walked to where her boyfriend had turned up the dirt track. The track was empty except for something glowing on the ground.
Cautiously picking her way along the path, bordered by low hedgerows, she picked up the phone and stared at the picture: the back of a nun’s wimple.
Clare,
shouted a voice, I’m over here.
Looking toward the source of the sound, she could clearly see Steve crossing a ploughed field to her left. He was walking away from her, towards some woodland.
Stop, come back,
she screamed out, but she received no reply.
