It is quiet in the library, the books make no sound apart from the occasional rattling of the shelves as I walk by. Here is where my thoughts have free reign, deep notions receive shape, and become something tangible. This is the beginning of any story - a notion - my obsession with the english language not withstanding. Sir, Edgar Allen Poe gave me the inspiration I needed to put pen to paper, his horror stories set the scene of my own story. I also enjoy the works of George R. R. Martin on occasion, although I rather watch the episodes than read it. I suppose it appeals to my more brutal nature, which is why I indulge in playing airsoft from time to time. When I am not firing BB-pellets, I enjoy the life of any small town person, the first and foremost hobby of any resident of The Faroe Islands being good food and comfy chairs, but there is a time and place for everything. Tórshavn is the smallest capital in the world, a small town of just under 20000 people. Although this is not my place of birth, this is where I now reside, although it is only 45 minutes from my home town.

Richard and Jenny had cost me more than I had anticipated. Richard’s cunning on the tracks could only be rivaled by my own skills. I was sure my horse would win. Apparently Richard had done his homework more thoroughly. I lost a few thousands that day, but I bear no grudge. It’s a friendly game. We had a laugh about it at the country-club that evening. So typical of Jenny to brag about her husband’s accomplishments for everyone to hear. Even if she didn’t announce it into a microphone, she would be sure to tell the one person who couldn’t keep any secrets—her best friend, Joan. I reasoned they became good friends due to the likeness of their names… and why not? It’s as good a reason as any.

I got a few verbal bashes from practically everyone present that evening—to be expected after a lost battle, so to speak. I handled it well, and the evening went on as it always does. No doubt I would hear of my embarrassment at a later time. I heartily noted, that the case wasn’t over as of yet. I would get back at Richard first chance I got. Add a grin and some charm, followed by a raising of the glass and everyone’s mind was off the subject, thinking only of a refill.

Things were not so glamorous at home. Keeping up appearances would have softened the blow, but she always was one for drama—my dear Katherine. I had been searching for a new house since the break-up. We had been together for the last six years. Every relationship has its ups and downs, and I would have endured
