An Atterberry Christmas - Leah Price
CHAPTER ONE
OTHERWORLD WAS COLD and gray. Only a few shaking leaves clung to spidery branches. Dull clouds hovered ominously overhead and Glenna shivered as a frosty breeze came rattling through the bare trees. She pulled her cloak tightly around her chest, thankful for its warmth.
Glenna's blonde locks were loose under the hood of her cloak. Only a few straggling strands fell forward over her chest. Stepping over a large, moss-covered stone, Glenna grasped her cloak in both hands, lifting it high off the ground. She had already tripped several times thanks to the long fabric trailing out behind her. The cloak fell in waves of cloth to the ground and the hood was so large, Glenna had to turn her head to peek around the dim trees.
It's freezing,
Glenna said, her teeth chattering.
I'm not cold at all,
Flutter said, her tiny voice ringing out from safely inside the cloak. The sprite did sound warm and happy from her spot on Glenna's shoulder. The heavy hood and Glenna's hair kept her warm and she nestled against Glenna neck lazily, as if she were about to fall asleep.
You would be if you were out here instead of inside my cloak,
Glenna said. She sighed as she withdrew the note from the folds of fabric covering her hands and stared at it. Her numb fingers shook in the cold air.
Glenna, the note read, come quickly. As soon as you read this! I need your help! Hurry! It all depends on you! The letters were large and blocky. Then, scrawled haphazardly underneath, it further read: And bring walnuts.
The note was signed in large, flourishing script with just one word.
Atterberry.
It must be a mistake,
Glenna said. He can't mean that he is in terrible trouble and needs walnuts.
Why can't he?
Flutter asked.
Well,
Glenna said. Most people don't put their shopping list on urgent cries for help.
They don't?
Not in my world anyway,
Glenna said, stuffing the note back into the pocket of her cloak. She was walking as fast as she could, despite the repeated bumping against her shins from the bag of walnuts she clasped in her left hand. The narrow trail leading to Atterberry's house was littered with various branches and bushes and sharp thorns tore into Glenna's cloak.
But this is Otherworld,
Flutter cried. We don't do things the same way here.
You're right about that,
Glenna gritted her teeth as the heavy bag of walnuts smacked her bruised leg once more.
Glenna had not yet become accustomed to the ways of Otherworld, despite her adventures there. Living and working on the Renaissance faire circuit with her family had seemed like adventure enough, but then one day, Glenna had stumbled across an old woman on a trail. She had given Glenna her necklace, a pendant now hanging around her neck. With it, Glenna found she was able to travel from her world to the land of Otherworld, an enchanted realm where all the myths and magic of the Renaissance players came to life.
And now Atterberry had left her a letter, though
