This is a two-act Christian play that is family friendly and appropriate for all ages. God wants a dishonest chariot salesman to be the 13th Apostle of Jesus. The angel Gabriel certainly has his hands full on this assignment, as he helps Sammy learn the meaning of love, self-sacrifice, and the forgiveness of Jesus.

    This play mixes comedy and religion to recount the story of a cheating chariot salesman running from Roman hitmen and his own feelings about God.

    CHARACTERS:

    (In order of appearance)

    GABRIEL: Angel. He is witty, direct, and to the point.

    SAMMY: Dishonest chariot salesman. Buys chariots that were crashed in the Roman Coliseum and resells them to Roman citizens that have challenged credit. He is self-centered, dishonest, and cynical. He is short, overweight, and a sloppy dresser. His motivation is money.

    DANNY: Sammy’s cohort in crime.

    MARY: Mother of Jesus.

    OLD MAN: Hobbles along with a cane.

    BAHZERK (pronounced BAH-ZIRK): Head of the Roman vanguard. He is large framed, muscular, and vicious.

    TWO ROMAN SOLDIERS: They are under the command of BAHZERK.

    JOHN THE BAPTIST: Black hair & beard.

    BLIND MAN: Wears tattered clothing.

    VIRTUE: Daughter of Eli. She is a follower of Jesus.

    ELI (short for Elijah): Nomad shepherd. He is elderly, grey haired, and has a long beard. He walks with a staff. He is perceptive and wise. Eli has only one daughter, Virtue.

    PONTIUS PILATE: Roman Governor of Judea.

    BARABBAS: Prisoner waiting to be crucified.

    JESUS: The Son of God, The Messiah; He also appears as a stranger to Sammy, but is Jesus.

    6 - 8 PEOPLE WHO ARE WALK-ONS: They are the shoppers in the town square. They are the people in the crowds gathered to hear John the Baptist and when Jesus is carrying His cross. They also double as the people who stand, listening to Pontius Pilate and accusing Sammy of being an Apostle of Jesus. Offstage, they also shout Free Barabbas! Crucify Jesus! They are the spectators who line the street while Jesus passes them on the way to His crucifixion. Among the walk-ons, there are two women who talk to each
