About this ebook
A TIME-TESTED METHOD OF RECEIVING CLEAR AND ACCURATE ANSWERS
The I Ching (pronounced as Yi Jing) is the oldest oracle in the world. It has been used as a system of divination and fortune telling in China for over 3,500 years. Although the West has known about the I Ching for over 300 years, thus far the only readily available translations to the Western world have been the Zhou-Yi or the Zhou Dynasty version of the I Ching. Zhou-Yi texts are terse and cryptic. The interpretations and the meanings from these texts can vary greatly. When used for the purposes of divination and fortune telling, the Zhou-Yi verses are unclear and subject to open interpretations. Even as far back as over 2,000 years ago, people wanted more. They wanted clear and actionable answers from the I Ching; thus, the Clear-Cut Method of the I Ching was born.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
PART ONE
A VERY BRIEF HISTORY OF THE I CHING
The true origin of the I Ching was lost in the mist of time.
All we know is that it existed in one form or the other for at least 3,500 years in China.
The current best archeological evidences of the I Ching showed its earliest uses as divination tools.
Throughout the millenniums, the I Ching has evolved to be more than mere divination tools.
Indeed, at one point it was even elevated to be the most important canon of the classical Confucian teachings.
The ideas and the principles of the I Ching have inspired and influenced many aspects of the Chinese culture and civilization throughout the millenniums and continue to this very day.
Its influences are far-reaching and encompassing.
Aspects of the Chinese culture and civilization that are influenced by the I Ching include but not limited to architecture, art, economics, martial arts, medicine, music, philosophy, politics, social structure, and even math and science.
In time, the fame and the principles of the I Ching have spread beyond the borders of China.
The texts that are commonly known as the I Ching, or the Book of Changes, really did not come into existence until the Zhou Dynasty (1046 BCE-256 BCE).
What is commonly known as the I Ching to the westerners is actually mostly the Zhou Yi, or the Zhou Dynasty version of the I Ching.
Almost all translated works on the I Ching are from these collected Zhou Yi texts.
While the Zhou Yi is an indispensable part of the entire I Ching heritage; but if one's intention is to study the I Ching for its predictive, divination and fortune-telling capabilities; then the Zhou Yi should not be the only material to focus on.
As anyone who has experience with the Zhou Yi texts can attest to, the Zhou Yi is not the easiest or the clearest materials to understand and work with.
Although the terse verses of the Zhou Yi texts do sometimes give us the possibility of concrete guidance in practical daily affairs; but even as far back as at least 2,000 years ago in ancient China, people wanted more.
People wanted to get clear and direct answers from the I Ching. Thus, the Clear-Cut Method was born.
THE ORIGINS OF THE CLEAR-CUT METHOD
As early as over 2,000 years ago, during the time of the Han Dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE), a revolution in the I Ching was quietly taking place.
According to historic records, Jiao Yan Shou (焦延壽 or JYS) was the magistrate of a small prefecture within the Han Dynasty.
JYS came from a very modest background. His family was very poor and without any social status.
Even from this humblest of all beginnings, JYS was a very diligent student.
Due to his hard works and virtuous behaviors, it was not long before he attracted the attentions of the local nobilities.
Impressed by his desires to learn and the willingness to work hard, a member of the imperial family decided to sponsor his studies.
Based on his achievement on the Imperial Examinations for Government Positions (科舉)his very first appointment was to be the magistrate of a small prefecture called Xiao Huang Xian (小黃縣).
It was said that JYS used the I Ching to help him governed during his tenure as the magistrate.
When he first arrived at his newly appointed post, his prefecture was a hotbed of criminal activities.
The local people had suffered greatly because there was no guarantee of property or even personal safety.
Crimes were rampant everywhere and the criminals had eluded capture.
Employing his improvements and modifications to the existing Zhou Yi system of the I Ching, JYS was able to solve the crimes and caught the criminals that were ravaging his prefecture.
It was said that whenever a crime was committed, JYS was able to catch the criminals using his new method of the I Ching.
As his new I Ching method further improved, it was said that he was even able to prevent the crimes from happening by knowing in advance, who were about to commit the crimes.
In a very short time, his prefecture became safe and prosperous. Due to his stellar achievements, the imperial government bureaucracy wanted to promote him to greater responsibilities.
It was recorded that JYS was so loved by the local people.
Three times the imperial government bureaucracy wanted to promote JYS to be the governor of a different and a much bigger province; three times, it took the massive petitions and the pleadings from the people and the special imperial edicts from the emperor himself to give JYS special permissions to stay as the magistrate of that small prefecture.
JYS was not a man of ambition; he was a humble and a wise scholar, a sage, and a servant of the common people.
He never left that small prefecture and died serving the people there.
In his free time, he wrote treatises on his new method of the I Ching; he also trained and inspired a new generation of the I Ching masters; one of his students was the legendary Jing Fang (京房 or JF).
Like his brilliant master JYS, JF was a genius in his own right.
Unlike his humble master; however, JF was bold and ambitious.
He was determined to root out corruptions in the imperial court and to reform the entire political system of the empire.
JF believed that with his skills and talents he could shake the empire from its very foundation and made it a more just society for all.
Throughout the thousands of years of recorded history, natural catastrophes such as earthquakes, floods, and droughts...etc. have plagued and devastated the Chinese people.
At the age of 33, based on his numerous virtuous deeds and behaviors, JF was finally summoned to serve the imperial court.
Initially JF had been just one faceless minister among the many; but armed with his further improvements and his development of a new method to divine the I Ching, JF presented predictions of natural catastrophes to the new emperor.
According to the historical records, JF's predictions of natural catastrophes all came true and the new emperor relied on JF to be one of his trusted advisors.
