    Chapter One

    A New Dawn

The wind tossed rays, from the late morning sun, flickered across the rose colored bedspread as Amanda finally awakens from her restful night’s slumber. Seeing that Linda’s bed hadn’t been slept in, she looks around and notices a note leaning against the flower vase on the table. Quickly she gets the coffee started. As the rich aroma begins to fill the room, she washes the sleepiness from her eyes.

Drawing the curtain slightly open, she sits at the little round table, sipping her coffee. Once finished reading Linda’s letter, she sets it down in front of her and Stares at the frost covered window. Remembering all that had happened the night before, wishing it was just a bad dream. How could she have not known? She wonders.

Suddenly the phone begins to ring, startling her. She jumps to answer.

Hello, Mrs. Thornton? Yes? She answers. This is the front desk, are you checking out today? Yes, what time is it? she asks, relieved that it was only the front desk. It’s now quarter till eleven, ma’am. Oh my, it’s that late? I must have over slept. I’ll be leaving in just a few minutes. That’s fine, and thank you for staying with us. You’re welcome. She replies, hanging up the phone.

Having not realized that it was already eleven, she begins rushing around, gathering her things. Looking through her suitcase, she quickly chooses her jogging outfit, knowing it will be warm and comfortable to travel in. Hearing the howling of the cold winter wind, she buttons up her coat real tight, preparing herself for the cold, frigid blast.

Pulling the hotel door closed, she exits the room, and quickly looks all around the parking lot. Battling the biting of the cold wind, she struggles with her keys, from her continued search, for any sign of him.

With her door finally unlocked and opened, she jumps in, and quickly locks it back. Waiting a few moments for the car to warm, she wipes a small amount of the frost from the windshield, waiting for the warm air from the defroster to finish the job. With her earlier worries returning, in wondering why all of this has had to happen, she drives out to the road, across the bridge, turns onto the on ramp, and now quickly accelerates onto the interstate.

Setting her cruise control on eighty five, she quickly heads out of town, wanting to put some distance behind her before nightfall.

    Chapter Two

    Yesterdays Memories

Now being within the city limits, she eases up on the cruise control, due to the unusually high Holiday traffic with so many on the road traveling.

With the highway becoming wet from the warm winter suns continual melting of the snow covered shoulders, Amanda begins thinking back to where everything went wrong.

With the festive Christmas lights and decorations all aglow, as the town square’s gift shops were filled with people shopping for their last minute holiday items.

Amanda, wanting to find a present for her husband Jack, one that he would really love, she heads straight for the jewelry department. Answering the sales clerk’s offer for assistance, she tells her, Thank you, but I’m just looking.

Looking through the glass, at all the men’s watches, she comes across one. Perfect! She thinks, admiring a silver and gold one. And with the small diamonds, all around its face, I know he will just love it. She thinks excitedly.

Getting the sales clerks attention, she points through the glass counter and says I’ll take that one. She tells her, handing her her card. While waiting for the gift to be wrapped, she continues to look around.

Within minutes, the sales clerk walks up, and hands her the now, beautifully wrapped gift. Thanking her, Amanda turns and exits the store.

Driving home now all excited about his gift, and also of the look on his face; he will have, when he finally opens it. She wonders if she’ll be able to can contain her excitement, having two more whole days to wait until Christmas.

Slowly passing a strange car parked out front, she wonders who it could possibly be, as she turns into the driveway. Stopping, she quickly clicks her remote and waits as the steel gates slowly open. She then rushes down the drive towards the house, as the gates close behind her.

As the door slowly rises, she pulls into the four car garage, and parks. Entering the house through the downstairs door, she locks it behind her, and walks through the small hall to the kitchen. Setting her keys and shopping bag on the marbled counter top, she then reaches in the small gift bag, and takes out the watch, and places it into her purse. Hearing voices, she walks towards the front stairs. Passing the study she looks in and sees Jack talking to a distinguished young man holding a black briefcase tight in his grip. The surprise from her sudden appearance caused their conversation to come to an abrupt stop.

Hello dear, you are home early. turning his look quickly to her, surprised, not realizing she had even come home. Yes, I know. I was fortunate to have found exactly what I was looking for at the first shop on my list. She replied.

    "I’ll be right with you
