    CHAPTER ONE

    Outside, thunder boomed in the distance from a wave of Sunday afternoon thunderstorms nearing the small village of Mesopotamia, Ohio.

    Inside a jail cell, Frank Jackson sat on the edge of a comfortable cot with an arm propped on a knee and his chin resting on his fist like Rodin’s The Thinker. He stared through the bars of his cell at the ten-year-old boy who slumped in an office chair and stared back at him. You got a name, kid? Frank said without blinking. He knew he was in a staring contest and there was no way he was going to lose.

    The dark-haired boy fidgeted in his seat, but didn’t break his stare. I’m not supposed to talk to the prisoners.

    You just talked to one. Frank narrowed his gaze and his stare became more of a glare.

    The boy glanced to the side and said, That doesn’t count. He realized he broke down first and snapped his fingers in frustration. My name is Charlie.

    Relaxing in the glow of his victory, Frank smiled and leaned back on the cot. My name is Frank. Nice to meet you, Charlie. He gave him a quick salute and said, Do you live in Mesopotamia?

    Charlie shook his head. Naw, we live a couple of miles outside of Mespo…in the country. By the way, nobody says Mesopotamia unless they’re tourists looking for the Amish people or they’re just plain lost.
