    CHAPTER ONE

    The late night Cleveland streets were mostly void of traffic as the black limousine effortlessly navigated its way back to Will Dresden’s mansion after picking up Frank Jackson from the airport. A successful first-time mission in Columbus had resulted in a quiet, but brief conversation between Will and Frank and now they were lost in their own thoughts, staring out their respective windows with satisfied, but tired faces.

    Butler Ainsworth glanced into his rear-view mirror and said, Will, there’s an urgent call for you from Melanie Piper. She sounds rather distraught. Butler patched the call back to the passenger area.

    Will straightened up immediately and said, Mel? This is Will. What is the problem?

    Sobbing echoed out of the speaker. I-I don’t know what’s happening, Will. I was carjacked on the west side and someone threw a hood over my head. Tell my mother—. A slap to the face and a scream rang out from Mel.

    A moment of silence and then a deep, distorted voice filled the air, Lethal Bill? How’s life in that wheelchair?

    Who is this? Will shouted.

    The distorted voice shot back, "Don’t get your panties in a twist, Billy Boy. I’m one of your proud alumni you sent away to rot in prison. Trouble is, I didn’t think too much of the accommodations and I busted out. Before I broke out though, I suffered. I suffered a whole lot. Now it’s your turn to suffer. I learned a word in the joint that’s gonna come in handy here. That word is vicariously. As the educated man you are, I’m sure you know what that word means.
