When the war had started, Elizabeth Lewis had not been sure what to think. It was scary, but also exciting. She knew that the last war had been a bad thing, that hundreds of thousands of men had died. But in school, they has also been taught tales of British heroism, of soldiers winning the Victoria Cross, of how the Empire had taught a lesson to the beastly Huns. So she was excited, as well as scared. Surely if Britain had beat the Germans once, they could beat them again?

Now, four years in, Elizabeth had formed a very clear opinion of the war. It was boring, ghastly, and she wished it was over.

First, she had not seen her daddy for almost two years. He was stationed in Africa, fighting Rommel and his Panzers in the desert. Daddy wrote home regularly, but it wasn’t the same as having him in the house. Elizabeth loved her father, and she missed him terribly. Her mother missed him even more, and had spent most of the time he had been away distracted and depressed.

Her 18th birthday had driven home just how much they both missed him. Elizabeth knew that it should have been a happy occasion, a landmark – the beginning of her womanhood. Instead, it had been dreary. No birthday cake, thanks to rationing. No party, thanks to an ill-timed air raid siren that meant it had had to be cancelled. And no daddy to wish her happy birthday. Her mother had sensed her unhappiness, and they had ended up in each other’s arms, both crying. Some way to spend a birthday.
