Introduction
German Festivals and Traditions was written by two teachers to provide information about festivals and traditions in Germany in response to the revised KS3 Framework for Modern Foreign Languages.
‘Contexts for learning should give pupils opportunities to explore aspects of the life and culture of countries and communities where the language is spoken. These could include people, places, festivals, national events, food, sport, history, education, climate, geographical features, buildings, the spoken and the written word, music and song, the visual arts and the media.’ (KS3 Framework Modern Foreign Languages).
Addressing Intercultural Understanding (strand 3), and the importance of ‘appreciating cultural diversity’, this book introduces cultural aspects of everyday life in other countries via a month-by-month account. Every month has a variety of ideas, suggested teaching ideas, vocabulary and photocopiable guided sheets.
German Festivals and Traditions also provides opportunities to exploit ever important cross-curricular links in support of CLIL.
Analysis grids show how the ideas in this book can be linked with the learning objectives of the KS3 Framework for Modern Foreign Languages, making it an invaluable tool for lesson planning and preparation.

There are many ways to help pupils learn new vocabulary and it is important to use a variety of methods and make it fun. Below are some successful ideas that have been tried and tested:
