About this ebook
Tree Rings and Climate deals with the principles of dendrochronology, with emphasis on tree-ring studies involving climate-related problems. This book looks at the spatial and temporal variations in tree-ring growth and how they can be used to reconstruct past climate. Factors and conditions that appear most relevant to tree-ring research are highlighted. Comprised of nine chapters, this book opens with an overview of the basic biological facts and principles of tree growth, as well as the most important terms, principles, and concepts of dendrochronology. The discussion then shifts to the basic biology governing the response of ring width to variation in climate; systematic variations in the width and cell structure of annual tree rings; and the significance of tree growth and structure to dendroclimatology. The movement of materials and internal water relations of trees are also considered, along with photosynthesis, respiration, and the climatic and environmental system. Models of the growth-climate relationships as well as the basic statistics and methods of analysis of these relationships are described. The final chapter includes a general discussion of dendroclimatographic data and presents examples of statistical models that are useful for reconstructing spatial variations in climate. This monograph will be of interest to climatologists, college students, and practitioners in fields such as botany, archaeology, hydrology, oceanography, biology, physiology, forestry, and geophysics.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This scientific text is authoritative on the relationship between tree growth and climate, and on determining exact age of an event that involves a tree. The focus, as the title implies is with using climate to calibrate tree growth rates to an exact year, using statistics as a tool, for the purpose of pinning an exact year to an event such as a fire or volcano eruption. What the book is not about is the other uses of tree ring study, such as age distribution of a grove of similar species trees, or chronology of several woodlots, or to check whether stream diversion has affected a forest growth rate...However, the book does cover very clearly all the principles by which tree growth rate is dependent on. The text also summarizes the sample proceedure technique and the history of tee-ring study. There are hints throughout the book on things such as tree species that are recommended for use, tree site tecommendations for coring, the time to be expected for a full study of a group of 50 sampled trees, and so on.The book is well organized into many chapters, some of which build on others, some follow the sequential nature of working with tree ring data from collection, through analysis, to results. The book is strongly about the science and technique of tree ring study and so there are only three or photos of actual trees, although there are over a dozen photos of actual tree rings. The science goes deeply into many equations and graphs of the properties associated with tree growth rate and sample correlation.
