Dragon heir Dracor has had a close shave with an evil, carnivorous spider. He escapes narrowly, thanks to 13-year-old Jacen Finley's bravery. However, Dracor sustains a broken wing and is unable to fly back to his kingdom.

Out of pity, and awe, Jacen offers to nurse Dracor back to health. The only thing he cannot foresee is his protective mother's reaction. Torn between taking care of the injured dragon and obeying his mother, Jacen goes with his heart.

Meanwhile, Dracor faces yet another dilemma. Should he accept the boy's help once more? What will his parents, who abhor humans with a vengeance, say if they hear of it?

    Dragon Tails - Ramon Higgins

    THE STORY SO FAR....

In the land of Vinheim, 13-year-old Jacen Finley is a courageous but naive farmboy living along the edge of the vast, mysterious, and dangerous Ashen Forest. Legend has it that beyond the Ashen Forest lies the towering Mt. Aldinfell, and atop its peak ... the mythical Wyrmgarden. The City of Dragons.

But the Wyrmgarden is no myth. 60-year-old Dracor is the youngest son of King Lundorm and Queen Salantha, rulers of the Wyrmgarden. When Dracor’s older brother Ohen, the heir to the Throne of Scales, is killed by a dragonslayer, the title of heir – and the burden of responsibility – falls to Dracor. But when Dracor’s uncle Calithrax leads a team to recover Ohen’s body from the human lands, Dracor sneaks out of the palace and follows them, eager to defy his father’s command that no dragon shall leave the Wyrmgarden without permission.

Soon, Dracor loses sight of his uncle’s party and bumbles right into a heavily defended castle. While escaping, he takes an arrow to the wing and plummets into the Ashen Forest ... crash landing smack in the middle of a giant spider web!

The next morning, Jacen is astonished to find Dracor and the spider web while venturing into the forest to collect game. While Dracor at first dismisses the boy’s help in getting out of the web, he has a secret shame that prevents from getting himself out – Dracor was born without the ability to breathe fire. When the monstrous spider shows up to claim her prize, Jacen comes to Dracor’s aid and gets him out of the net, allowing the now freed dragon to defeat the spider with ease.

In exchange for saving his life, Dracor offers to grant one request of Jacen’s, no matter how large. To Dracor’s dismay, Jacen asks to be taken to the Wyrmgarden to lay eyes on the City of Dragons himself. Dracor reluctantly agrees, but they can’t go anywhere while Dracor’s wing is still injured.

And so, Jacen invites Dracor to come home with him and rest, without regard for what his poor mother is going to say when she meets her new house guest....

    ***

The sun was high in the sky by the time Jacen and Dracor emerged from the woods, and Jacen’s stomach grumbled in anticipation of his midday meal. There came a rumble from beside him, loud enough that Jacen wondered for a moment if the earth was moving. Then he realized that it had come from Dracor’s stomach.

I need food, Dracor grumbled. I haven’t eaten anything since yesterday. I can’t recuperate on an empty stomach.

Don’t worry, he told Dracor. We’ve got plenty of food.

A sturdy eight-foot-tall fence separated the Finley property from the wilderness beyond. Made from solid oak banded with wrought iron, and lined with sharp spikes along the top, it wasn’t something Jacen gave much thought to anymore, but he noticed Dracor was eyeing it suspiciously.

It keeps the wild animals out, Jacen said, and
