I received a copy of this book from Netgalley/Intrepid Reads for an honest review. "The Brigadier's Runaway Bride" by Erica Ridley is the fifth story in the "Dukes of War" historical romance series. This is the first book of the series that I have read. Edmund and Sarah were to be married after the war. Sarah met up with Edmund before he went to battle so they had one wonderful night together. Sarah has a problem now she pregnant and Edmund did not come back from the war. What is a pregnant girl to do when her intended is dead or is he? This a sweet quick read.

A great story, short, but sweet. Sarah had done the unforgivable, according to the ton, and slept with her beloved before they were married, she is now very pregnant and poor Edmund has lost his life on the battle field. Sarah has no choice but to marry another else her child will be born a bastard. So she know finds herself about to marry the Duke of Ravenwood when at the last moment Edmund reappears...looking bedraggled...to stop the wedding. He'd just return from the the war were he'd been wounded.Edmund then insist on marrying Sarah. But they both have issues and married life is not all that it should be, what with being new parents and Edmund's readjustment to life after the war.A wonderful story of love and how we all have to readjust in are lives.

Another delightful installment in the Dukes of War series. I was eagerly anticipating Sarah and Edmund's story. It was well worth the wait.I felt real sympathy for Sarah as a happy ever after for her didn't seem to be in the cards. Being unwed and pregnant, she was facing social ruin as well as the double blow of losing her beloved Edmund and the protection his name would have afforded her had they married before he left for war.She had to make some difficult decisions and she was lucky Edmund had good friends to look out for her.Fortunately, Edmund didn't perish as everyone had believed and he turned up in time to very dramatically and romantically stop the wedding and declare that he was going to marry her. Getting married was the easy bit though and only the beginning of their story. They missed out on the early days of leisurely courtship to be suddenly thrust into marriage and parenthood practically overnight. They have to find a way to get over their misgivings, guilt and insecurities in order to reconnect and find their way back to how it was between them before the war.Humorous and heartwarming, each installment of the series is consistent in its quality of writing, research and charm.I received a copy in exchange for an honest review

...so soPregnant to another man, Sarah Fairfax is about to marry her dead fiancée's comrade when the church door bursts open and the not so dead fiancée, Brigadier Edmund Blackpool returns to claim his bride. Be still my beating heart! Here is heady excitement, a tale to hang on! Unfortunately my beating heart cooled somewhat as I read on. The promise portrayed by this exciting premise fizzled into disappointment. The execution of a great plot just wasn't quite there. My enthusiasm was quenched. For me, The Brigadiers Runaway Bride didn't reach the potential it could have or the standard set by previous 'dukes' stories.Despite, this those of us following the Dukes of War series will want to read it.A NetGalley ARC

Edmund and Sarah had everything to look forward to when he came home from war – if he came home from war. However, when they are finally face to face again neither is what the other one expected…not at all. Will their friendship, love and passion be able to withstand what lies ahead of them? Will they be able to trust one another, share their innermost thoughts and become the loving couple and parents they both wish to be? That is what this story is about. I like both Sarah and Edmund and think this book deals well with the issue of new parents and all they go through. I liked the depth of character development and also enjoyed seeing some of the characters from previous books in the series brought forth again. In one scene, where Edmund pushes Sarah to the ground and covers her thinking due to something that happens outside the window that thrusts him back to the battlefield, I can honestly say that very thing happened in my Beirut apartment decades ago when an ex-marine and his wife were visiting and shooting started nearby outside. Great story! Looking forward to reading more in this series soon!
