Chapter One
A man in a trench coat that had clearly seen better days was struggling with a giant suitcase on the mansion steps, blackened by soot from a not so easy to recall fire. He was oblivious to the eyes following his every move from behind the curtains of a windows on the second floor. Stopping for a few seconds to catch his breath, he murmured something inaudible, probably cursing the many generous meals his belly had had the honor and the pleasure to meet during the last four decades or so. He thought for a brief second about the taxi driver who had flatly refused to take him closer than one good mile to his destination.
The curtains moved imperceptibly, and the corpulent man raised his eyes just that instance. A cold chill coursed through his body, but he shook it off. He had no time for childish scares at this point; he verified mentally if he had all the legal papers with him.
Breathing heavily, while dragging the suitcase, he finally made it to the door. He did not have the time to knock, though; the heavy door opened with a screeching sound. A man with a gaunt face, whose age could be anywhere between 40 and 60, measured him from head to toes with hawk like eyes, without saying anything. A few seconds of uncomfortable silence later, the man dressed in trench coat decided to start the conversation.
My name is James Rollins. I represent Rollins & Rollins. Monsieur Tremblay is waiting for me
, he spoke impatiently. We talked on the phone.
The thin man did not move an inch, and continued to stare at the unwanted guest. A deep, throaty voice was heard right then, saving James Rollins, Esq., from his misery.
Alphonse, let mister Rollins in. I have been expecting him.
Not without reluctance, the man called Alphonse opened the door and allowed the lawyer entrance into a bleak hallway. Rollins murmured a polite ‘thanks’, but stopped dead in his tracks upon spotting the source of the voice from earlier. At the top of a flight of what looked like once grandiose stairs, a tall man in a frock coat was staring him down.
The lawyer blinked a few times, to adjust his sight to the dimly lit surroundings. He noticed that hall was lit by nothing but candles. A lot of candles. ‘That would explain the fire’, Rollins thought to himself, remembering the soot covered entrance steps. For him, all looked like a terrible fire hazard.
The man began descending the stairs, but without a hint that he had any intention to hurry. The lawyer stared at him, trying hard to hide his impatience. Finally, the master of the house stopped in front of him. He had long, perfectly white hair, yet his features indicated he was still in his late 20s, if not younger. For Rollins, it was difficult to say what color monsieur Tremblay’s eyes were, but, in the candle light, they looked like dark red pools, a contrast to his pale complexion.
The guest made a quick note to himself that the house owner was a handsome man. He was interrupted from his trail of thoughts by the same throaty voice.
Alphonse, take mister Rollins’s luggage and coat and put them in his room upstairs. If you care to join me in the living room, mister Rollins?
he gestured. Alphonse will be serving a quick lunch in half an hour. Until then, we have time to put some things in order.
The idea of lunch made the lawyer’s mouth water instantly. The promise of dry legal conversation, not so much, but this was the reason why he was here, after all. He followed his strange host, who took the lead to show him the way.
Chapter Two
Monsieur Tremblay, I believe the offer is rather fair.
I have invested all my family’s fortune in this house. It is difficult for me to sell it so cheap. Actually, it is difficult for me to sell, period.
The master of the house dipped his lips in his glass filled with red wine, while carefully watching his interlocutor. For a brief second, Rollins felt like being watched by a strange, dangerous beast. The red reflections in the man’s eyes intensified, and the lawyer shifted uncomfortably in his seat.
Are you willing to negotiate? I trust we can reach a common ground
, the lawyer pressed.
Of course. We just need to discuss the terms.
I am not going to lie to you, monsieur Tremblay. I am here to appraise the property, as well. So far, I must say that I am far from being impressed. It seems like parts of the house are in various states of disrepair … which means that the future owner will need to make important investments just to make it livable.
The red pools turned into slits.
Mister Rollins, are you suggesting that I am neglectful?
The lawyer raised his hands in defense. "No, far from me such a thought! I can understand that taking care of such a large property is a daunting task. That is why we intend to take this burden
