The oils are then mixed with another substance such as a lotion, oil or alcohol and then inhaled or sprayed in the air. You can also use essential oils in massage or bath water.
Aromatherapy originated from Europe and people have been practicing this form of alternative medicine from the early 1900s. Pioneers of aromatherapy believed that the fragrances in the oils stimulated nerves and these nerves would send impulses to the part of the brain, which controlled memories and emotions, and the result on the body would be stimulating or calming depending on the type of essential oil used. Over the years, more people have turned to the use of essential oils as an alternative medicine.

What are essential oils?
Essential oils are simply volatile liquids distilled from different parts of plants such as the leaves, stems, bark, seeds, roots, fruit and flowers. An ‘Oil’ is considered essential in the sense that it has a distinctive essence or scent of the plant it was extracted from. A variety of factors normally determine the purity of the essential oil like geographical region, climate, the part of the plant the oil was produced from, soil condition, fertilizer, harvest methods and the distillation process.
Essential oils are not what we could consider actual oils because they do not have fatty acids. Essential oils are volatile meaning they evaporate when exposed to air, are scented, do not feel slick or oily and do not leave any oil residue.
