Grace and Christine had been good friends since starting work at the same time in the shipping and receiving department of Wilson and Smith, a large Orlando mail-order firm. That was ten years ago when they were both still single. Grace was 28 when she started there and got a minor promotion before marrying her husband Elliot, an up-and-coming finance manager.

Christine was younger, just out of high school. About five years ago, she married Hudson, a moneyed local businessman, twenty-two years her senior. He had inherited a thriving business from his parents and made it even more successful. With no need to work anymore, Christine could quit her job and live a life of luxury while still only in her twenties. Hudson’s money was one of the things that attracted Christine. However, she often complained about the prenuptial agreement he had made her sign. Grace sometimes wondered if Christine was happy or if she just married Hudson for his money.

Even though Christine no longer worked with Grace, they still got together a lot, and their husbands seemed to hit it off. Friends with a rich man made Grace’s husband, Elliot, happy. That bothered Grace, as her husband seemed to like Christine and Hudson for the wrong reasons.

Elliot especially liked being with Hudson when they were together at public events. Maybe that is why Elliot could advance so quickly at Wilson and Smith. The company's top executives knew Elliot went golfing and drinking with Hudson, an influential community member. A person's association's prominent people can have its perks.

It was not long before Elliot was promoted to Vice-President of Finance. Grace did not need to work thanks to his generous salary, and she sometimes thought about quitting her job.
