Gun Control for Bad Guys, Gun Solutions for Good Guys - Sal Mistretta

    Summary

    CHAPTER 1:

SHOULD WE PASS MORE ANTI-GUN LAWS?

Anti-gun laws are followed by the vast majority of law abiding people in the USA. Criminals don’t respond to existing gun laws and won’t respond to new gun laws, hence their name, criminals.

Numerous legislation has already been passed, both on a national level and a state level, yet violence with firearms is still common nationwide.

One example of federal legislation is the Gun Free School Zone Act (GFSZA), signed into law in 1990 by President George H.W. Bush (41). It prevents anyone from possessing a firearm (handgun/ longarm) in a school zone (inside a school building and anywhere within 1,000 feet).

This law was struck down by the Supreme Court in 1995. The high court stated that GFSZA was unconstitutional because Congress does not have the authority to legislate control over public schools.

In 1996, a revised version was signed into law by President Bill Clinton. New and improved GFSZA contains the same safeguards as the original GFSZA, but with exceptions built in for commerce. Commerce doesn’t make sense as an argument against GFSZA, but it was the winning formula, as roads sometimes intersect this 1,000 feet safety zone.

Obviously, armed cops can always respond to a 911 call to a school. Oddly enough, that same cop can’t be armed off
