About this ebook
IU-137 is a prequel - a novelette, added to Smashwords on July 30th 2015. The synthetic human is really brought to life in the sequel Crank Tech One: DESTRUCTION, the full novel. I've made IU-137 free, so you can get a feel for the robot before reading the main book. Crank Tech One, has been out since 2013 and is a very popular sci-fi adventure. But I've always felt that I should explain where Crank originally came from.
You can read IU-137 and Crank Tech One: DESTRUCTION in any order.
This is only the beginning!

Prologue
Before the automaton ‘Crank Tech One’ raged through our lives causing DESTRUCTION, there were originally prototypes. Creator of ‘Crank’ Professor of Robotics ‘Jarrad Shamtack’ of the Lucan Institute, had to start somewhere.
So he laboured for years on the creation that eventually became the synthetic human: IU-137.
This is where the short story begins…
Command One
At night, darkness and silence consumed the inside of the main building. That was, apart from the two hourly patrols made by the sole security guard, Dave. This though, should have been every hour, but he just couldn’t be bothered. It was too much like hard work. Well, nothing ever happened anyway! Dave would do his normal walk through. The sensors lit up in each section as he paced along the corridors. The only sound to be heard at this hour was the muffled thudding of his feet on the carpet, shortness of breath, and his open, loud yawns. At the end of his routine, he would stare down at the foyer from the interconnecting bridge, and place his hands on the glass facade, surveying his domain. Like Lord Vader commanding his troops. The only similarity was Dave’s heavy breathing, which sounded more or less the same wheeze as the Star Wars character. Once that was done, he would purge the vending machines for crisps, fizzy drinks and coffee - while waiting for the end of his shift. He liked his job. It was a simple and easy, with good pay.
He often drooled over his science fiction books – filling his head with wild ideas, and killing time in the boredom hours, as he called them. This is why he took on the job in the first place. He loved the Lucan Institute and all the electronic technology that came with it. He could do a ‘security check’ of the prototype robot in section seven. It was top secret. Dave loved the thought of an android coming to life and taking over the world. Robot Uprisings, his nostril’s flared at the thought. He always found an excuse to breach the lab each night, and peer through the inspection window of the pod, and look at the motionless android: IU-137. One time he was going to actually open the pod, step inside and touch it, but always ‘chickened out’ at the last minute.

From a secret location far from the campus, sinister things were taking place. A computer was all set to send information to the Lucan Institute. This toxic link was to be directed at a particular department and, one specific recipient. The software would be in the shape of a virus, which would control and command its victim. It would leave no trace of its source, or evidence of it ever existing. But
