    Learning to Trust - Part 6 - B.B. Roman

    Part 6: Paradigm Shift

I was in the mansion, walking around aimlessly, each footstep causing the wood floor to ripple like the surface of a pond. Although it was incredibly strange, I seemed to have no interest whatsoever in it. I was looking for something.

Where was Roland? Was I looking for him?

I searched in all of the kitchen cupboards, climbing up onto the countertops so I could reach the ones at the top. Empty. No plates, bowls, or cups. Just empty. When I glanced out the window, I saw nothing but thick, wispy fog, a menacing green glow illuminating the blankness. It was just numb—and spooky. I couldn't see more than a few feet outside of the window, but that didn't distract me from whatever my goal was. The kitchen ransacked—I wasn't closing any cupboards for some reason, something that would have normally driven me mad—I moved on.

Although it felt like I was on the prowl for Roland, something seemed off about my curious expedition through the mansion. The light outside seemed to pulse, to ebb and flow in intensity. Lush, neon greenness permitted my search to continue, thoroughly illuminating the halls and rooms.

Roland's office was always off-limits to me, the door usually locked unless he was inside. Tonight, however, it was unlocked and so I walked inside without any further consideration. It was pitch black; none of the eerie fog was reaching the room at all. My hands crawled along the wall, looking for a light switch. Were there no windows here?

I got down on my hands and knees and continued feeling around, the room responding to my touch as if it were a living, organic thing. There was a dull pressure just from being inside, a feeling that reminded me of a sinus-cold. I didn't like it, yet I stayed there anyway, continuing on a quest I couldn't even begin to comprehend.

The more I dug around, the less I figured Roland was actually in here. Why would he sit around in a pitch black room? My hands grabbed objects, chairs, pens and pencils, floppy disks, things that I could only identify by touch. I started finding what felt like diamonds and other precious stones, riches that I just discarded into the darkness like they were trash.

A feeling of urgency washed over me and my hands started working even more frantically than before. Something was coming. There was a low rumbling, like the groaning of steel, like a giant ship being pummeled by an even more gigantic, angry ocean. If I slowed down, the rumble started to dissipate, only resuming to its previous levels when my speed increased. It was totally perplexing, but I kept
