About this ebook

Nine-year-old Fiona has the adventure of a lifetime while visiting Rome with her grandparents. It starts with the disappearance of her most prized possession, which mysteriously vanishes as she enjoys the sights and sounds in the Piazza Navona. Following a possible clue and her instincts, Fiona runs through the labyrinth of Rome's ancient streets in hot pursuit until she fears all is lost ...but then the magic of timeless Rome reaches out. Help appears in the form of a few off-beat and very unusual fur and feathered vagabond Romans. Streetwise and noble, they aid Fiona in her quest. Thus begins a detective tale that carries readers thru some of the Eternal City's most intriguing old sites. Fiona encounters a nasty villain, meets a Queen, negotiates with a powerful Don, overcomes her shortcomings, learns to trust her instincts and discovers dimensions of Rome never mentioned in any travel guide.

It’s just beautiful! exclaimed Fiona as she clutched the lovely little red pocketbook to her chest, Thank you, thank you, thank you! You’re very welcome, my dear replied her grandmother. Our pleasure! Enjoy! said her grandfather, Here’s something to put inside your new pocketbook for good luck, he said as he gave the girl the change from the purchase.

Fiona could not believe her good fortune – first a trip to Rome with her grandparents and now she had the prettiest pocketbook from one of the city’s finest leather shops! Wait until her friends at school saw it! Without a doubt, she would be the coolest girl in Miss Riley's 4th grade class.

Where next? asked her grandfather as they exited the leather shop.

Back to the Piazza Navona, replied her grandmother, after all the walking and shopping, I'm ready for a siesta at our hotel.

The trio made their way through a bustling maze of streets until they entered a big square encircled by beautiful old buildings with flower boxes in the windows and shops below.

The piazza was filled with people, musicians, mimes, and artists. Fiona’s senses were filled with all the sights, sounds, and delicious aromas from the restaurants and trattorias surrounding the piazza.

In the middle of the piazza was a big fountain with mermaids and giant sea horses, amidst colorfully dressed people out for a stroll. Beautiful music drifted through the air as Fiona twirled and skipped through the crowd. An old man was playing classical guitar as his dog slept on the cobble stones between him and a guitar case strewn with coins.

Curious, Fiona moved towards the small crowd
