    After more than two months, Kristen had almost forgotten she had a roommate. Their schedules just didn't intersect in any meaningful way. Swimming practice had her up before the sun every day and it was too far a commute to return between classes. By the time she got back the apartment mid-afternoon, the place was empty and it stayed so until Kristen went to bed. It was nice, really; the quiet in the evenings meant she never had trouble studying. It was like getting her own place for half the price.

    It was obvious that someone else lived there, of course. Things moved around. Food appeared and disappeared in the fridge. Dirty dishes would show up in the dishwasher—never left out or in the sink—or the sorted mail Kristen left on the coffee table always vanished. Occasionally, she noticed that someone had vacuumed or cleaned up in the kitchen.

    It was just a bit weird to live with someone and never see them.
