In the third installment in the Horses and Friends series, thirteen-year-old Kate Ferris already has one problem. Snooty, well-to-do Melissa is boarding her horse at Kate’s family stable. When Melissa suddenly turns nice, Kate is shocked ... and suspicious.
The last thing she needs is more trouble. So when a hooded rider appears—and then disappears—on a stunning black horse outside her home, Kate isn’t sure if Melissa is playing a trick or something more dangerous is going on. Either way, Kate and her friends will need an extra measure of faith and courage to solve this mystery.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The book starts our very odd, and that had me concerned, because I've loved the previous books in the series.
I thought the kids acted out of character, and the whole 'mystery rider' thing seemed just too wacky. I'm very glad I kept reading, because it all came together and made sense.
What I like about these books is their gentle Christian message. I'm not very religious, and I really don't like preachy books, but I appreciate the message these books send. Regardless of what religion you follow, if any, reading this book can be an enjoyable and enriching experience for readers of all ages. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Kate Ferris and her friends Tori and Colt are back in this third installment of the “Horses and Friends” children’s series. Their trio is becoming a foursome as Kate’s former rival, Melissa, starts hanging out with them. Kate, however, isn’t sure that Melissa’s intentions are good, and she remains suspicious; is the Lord softening Melissa’s heart, or does He perhaps have a plan for Kate in mind? To add to the mixed bag of emotions, the kids notice a mysterious hooded person riding a black horse at night near the Ferris’ barn. Who is it, and what is he or she hiding? Mysteries abound!Reminiscent of a Nancy Drew novel, “Mystery Rider” continues Miralee Ferrell’s “Horses and Friends” series. With a firm but gentle Christian backbone, the books feature characters with real flaws who are believable and with whom the younger generation will easily relate. The “Secrets For Your Diary” section at the end of the story underscores this connection. There is a perfect amount of suspense and conflict sure to keep readers intrigued while learning a little about horsemanship and friendship too.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great Pre-teen Mystery for Horse Lovers!!Miralee Ferrell has outdone herself in this Horses and Friends series for kids ages 8-12. Her latest offering, Mystery Rider, is as good, if not better, than the first two.Kate Ferris and her friends Colt and Tory have reluctantly let snobby Melissa into their social circle. Melissa suggests the kids advertise the stables by riding in the upcoming Fort Dalles Days parade. As the kids begin brainstorming, they are sidetracked by a spooky phantom rider, dressed all in black, face covered, riding a black horse. Who is this rider, and why is he/she trying to scare the friends? Is it Melissa herself, showing her true colors?Miralee shows a familiarity with daily struggles a family with an autistic child can face. She also sensitively shows the struggles young teens face as they navigate uncertain friendships, battling between following their human natures or Christ's directives. The teens in this story truly begin to blossom in this book, making it enjoyable for adult or preteen as well! Highly recommended!!
