About this ebook

Katie Brown enjoys Eldercare, but knows it's a mistake to get involved when she could be transferred at any time, even with a guy as nice as Max. Still, with such an interesting patient as Granny, along with a loving church family nearby, this particular assignment has made it tough to stay indifferent.

Then one day she hears of a missing manuscript, written by Granny's own mother decades ago. As an aspiring writer, Katie is fascinated, and sets out to find this piece of the family history.

In her search she may find more than just an old story. She may find some answers for herself, too.

    Dedication

Rachel Esther Clark did live, and she did write the short story, titled The Signal, included in its entirety here in Chapter 5. Her work has never been published before. Born March 9, 1893, she received her certificate of registration as a nurse on December 2, 1914. She went on to work for several years as a nurse, and was sent to the front lines in France during the first World War. After that, she lived most of her life in the Burbank, California area, where her children were born and raised as well. This is dedicated to her, and her family for allowing her work to be published within this story. The author of this book, Sherry Chamblee, personally found her short story among Rachel’s things at Rachel’s daughter’s house on February 11, 2014 – one hundred years after the certificate was issued, and perhaps the same year the story was written. So while Katie and Max, and the others mentioned, are fictional characters, Rachel’s family, and work really does exist.

    About the author

Sherry grew up in various cities around northern and central California. This gave her all sorts of stories that sat and festered in her brain, waiting to be let loose. She eventually went to college in Wisconsin, where she met her equally frenetic husband, Rich. They have six (yes, count them) children, two dogs and a cat, and currently reside in a madhouse in the southern California area. As a family, they enjoy being active in their local church. Sherry spends her time writing when not caring for Granny, the kids, the dogs, the cat and any number of strays in the neighborhood.
