    Sherlock Holmes is a fictional detective created by Scottish author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

    Sherlock Holmes first appeared in publication in 1887. He was eventually featured in four novels and 56 short stories.

    The stories of Sherlock Holmes and his side-kick John Watson cover a period from around 1880 up to about 1914.

    All but four Sherlock Holmes stories are narrated by Holmes's friend and biographer, Dr. John H. Watson. The only stories that are narrated by Holmes himself are The Blanched Soldier and The Lion's Mane.

    Not all of the novels and stories of Sherlock were published by the same publisher. A few of the publishers include Lippincott's Monthly Magazine, The Strand Magazine, and Beeton's Christmas Annual.

    The continued popularity of Sherlock Holmes has led to hundreds of works based on the character – including adaptations into other media and original stories.

    When the Sherlock Holmes stories were first published, they were only availible in print. Much of this was due to the fact that the stories were published in magazines.

    All of the stories are now availble in multiple different formats: paperback, hardcover, e-book, and audio.
