Introduction
Who can do what to whom? I believe that is likely the most concise description of the central object of politics ever formulated.
Some people are smart, some people are dumb. Some are foolish and some are wise. Some saints, some criminals. Some mind to their own business, and some want to rule the world. Hierarchy is part of human existence. It cannot be disposed of.
In the days of old, we are told, the first kings were chosen for their character and integrity. They kept power only by the consent of the priest class and other leading citizens. Thus monarchy promised to maintain the high character of the hierarchy. But Monarchy only works for the people when they have a wise and benevolent king. Even then, his progeny are pretty much guaranteed to be spoilt, and out of touch with the commoners. With a hereditary monarchy, it is only a matter of a few generations before we end up with Henry the Eighth, Caligula, or Nero.
Hierarchy must be controlled rather than eliminated. This is quite a trick when the powerful, by being powerful, have the means to determine limits to the limits on their behavior. The theory of Liberalism promised to do this by the guarantee of property rights for all (well, not quite in fact, all), separation and balance of powers, and presumption of equal legal status for all (again, not really all). That worked marginally well, until one class accumulated enough capital to subvert or buy off the whole system one piece at a time.
The political theory of Socialism/Communism then promised to solve the political question by the elimination of class distinctions. I think we all realize that this is impossible. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss, only now with a much smaller pie to distribute due to motivational and administrative inefficiencies. (Or just theft if you prefer.)
Communism in practice wound up becoming more like the sweaty pipe dream of a predatory capitalist.
Fascism had always been an aspect of Liberalism, It still is. I think it is fair to call it the bastard child of Liberal capital and Socialism. Cooperation between capital and state, winds up presenting the worst aspects and depredations of both, even without the ethno-national totalitarianism.
Of course what we have today in the West, is a representative Democratic political mechanism that is carefully filtered and controlled by state and capital (and intelligence organizations), along with a Fascist economy encumbered by rent seeking regulatory actors and corrupted by tax funded bailouts, and pet government contracts.
It is not my purpose in this series to detail all of the problems of the last three theories and their multitudinous aspects. There have been thousands of books written that do that quite well; I am merely laying out some simplified background for a context in which to fix my arguments and ideas. Things were working, or at least seeming to, and now they are not. It matters not whether this is due to inherent flaws in the original designs, or due to the eventual triumph of the iron laws of oligarchy and bureaucracy. The possibility that modern Western governments will provide a safe environment for self-determination, and at least modest freedom and prosperity for those willing to work and play by fair rules has evaporated. It is gone. It is not coming back.
Liberalism, the main remaining political theory of our age has ossified. Technology made it possible for the safeguards and even operational checks and balances built into it, to be subverted by the very interest they were presumably designed to protect against. In the case of revolutionary Socialism, the inherent flaws could no longer be compensated for with repression. In Liberalism, the checks and balances were twisted beyond all use, by big capital, mass media, and the slave issue. The introduction of large waves of immigration from non-Anglo lands is rapidly solidifying the new reality. That reality is that the government is now beyond any possibility of being limited or controlled by the people. The only balancing of powers done in the US now, is done from the top down, playing cultural, political, and ethnic blocks of the population against each other to retain the hegemony of the elites.
Many Americans believe their long ignored constitution is sacred. I agree that it contains some sacred ideas, but it was nothing more than a political tool to protect these ideas. The US constitution was a political tool designed by, and for, eighteenth century Anglo Saxon yeoman farmers. In today’s world of multiculturalism, instant communications, big corporations, and technocratically managed resources, this tool is about as useful as a model T ford would be on the autobahn.
Model T’s were great cars for their time, but no amount of tinkering or restoration will make one glide comfortably and safely down the interstate 80mph all day with no problems. It may be hard for some to believe, but there are people all over the world who have built their own cars, motorcycles and even airplanes from scratch in their garages. Of course some build replicas of simple antiques, but many build using the most advanced technology available. Some of these men have even invented their own new systems and components. This is often how our mechanical technology evolves.
We need as many people as possible to think and act like political mechanics for things to change. We can apply well known political tools in line with well-known political principles in new ways, to support a new vision of transparent, locally controlled government.
Dear American patriots; Stop trying to restore your hopelessly outdated and ossified 200 year old political system, The reasons it won’t work anymore are inherent in the design. Better yet, tell your overlords to stop trying so desperately to impose it on the rest of the world.
Let’s look and see what is available now, to build a new platform, to support a new vision. We’ll examine each part, separately, and inventory the components. We’ll look at the world’s history books as they are catalogues of political principles, mechanisms, and tools. We’ll analyze everything to see what can be used, and what must be discarded. We’ll invent new machanisims that have never been seen before. We will create a platform on which to assemble things in a manner appropriate to fulfill a vision upon which we can all agree.
Start to dream. The sacred ideals contained in the constitution need to be restated in a new vision. Not one designed to protect the common people from Monarchy, but one that will guarantee their rights against both oligarchs and state power. We need a vision that will guarantee those rights, against both overbearing government, and unaccountable corporations. We need a vision that respects the dignity of all people, and their right to peaceful self-determination. Not as groups, or blocks of wards of the state, but as unique human souls that were made in the image of God. We also need a new political framework to support and defend this vision, a modern one.
The founding document of the US, is the declaration of Independence which contains this little sermon.
"…That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to affect their Safety and Happiness.
Now that is a political tool that will never ossify!
