    Chapter One

    Sammy West played the final notes of an intricate blues riff on the electric guitar named for him. "Whew. I still got it. He whooped, shook out his hands, and flexed his fingers. How’s it going?" he asked John, his manager and confidant for the last twenty years.

    In appearance, he was Sammy’s polar opposite. John was half a foot shorter than the former rocker, had at least twenty-five pounds on him, and kept his dark hair closely cropped.

    After Sammy unplugged his guitar, he set it on the stand near the amplifier. Stretching to his full height, he rolled his shoulders to relieve the stiffness in his upper back. Today’s practice session was especially grueling. He’d struggled for weeks to create the perfect soundtrack for an upcoming documentary on the impact of eighties music. With his reputation on the line, he expected perfection from all the musicians, especially himself.

    He pulled two bottles of water from the small refrigerator in the corner of his spacious Nashville office, ambled past the framed gold records lining the wall, and stopped at the glass-top conference table where John sorted through small stacks of paper. Any of them jump out at you yet? After handing John the ice-cold water, he wiped the condensation from his palms on his faded jeans.

    Thanks. But reading these essays is something you should be doing. Not me. John unscrewed the bottle cap and swigged the water.

    "This contest was your brainy idea, not mine. Just read them then let me know what we got. Sammy raked his fingers through his hair and paced. Pick out the best ones. He shrugged one shoulder. Then I’ll draw the
