    Ezra grabbed his coat and opened the front door when Amos caught his arm. His hair was a tangled mess and his breath stank. The sun barely rested on the horizon, and he was already drunk. He’d probably never sobered from the prior evening.

    Ezra scowled at the all too familiar, caustic laugh.

    That whore left after you bedded her, didn’t she? Amos said.

    Ezra’s blood boiled. Go to bed Amos, you need to sleep the alcohol off.

    Amos continued his sardonic sound. Did you think she loved you? Give her a big diamond ring only to find out she returned to the streets the next morning? he said with an exaggerated frown.

    Ezra’s arm swung out, slamming Amos to the floor before he finished the sentence. He laid still, a knee in his ribs easily holding him in place. One hand held his chin, and the other wedged around his neck. All laughter ceased.

    Let me up, Ezra.

    I could kill you right now, with one - short - twist.

    But you won’t, Amos spat. Good old kind Ezra. You’re too much of a coward.

    Ezra twisted his hands and dug his fingers into Amos’ throat. He screeched.
